"We won't be releasing Tracy. As for your husband, he will be suspended until further investigation," Wynter said to Joleen.
When Janielle heard this, her expression shifted slightly. This was completely different from what she had expected. She didn't expect anyone to care about her situation.
Then, Wynter turned around to address Janielle. "But you must also bear the corresponding responsibility since you've harbored the intent to kill. As for the consequences, we'll discuss them when I return."
She said all this without paying attention to the surveillance.
The investigators exchanged glances. After all, higher-ups were already pressing for answers.
Joleen had quieted down, but according to the procedure, a would-be murderer like Janielle should be dealt with immediately.
Tracy was causing a scene, and Malcolm, now regaining his senses, was trying to pull strings.
Meanwhile, Janielle's phone kept ringing—her mother-in-law urging her to pick up the child.
"Reply to her and have someone bring the child over," Wynter instructed.
This was basically an open violation of the procedure. The investigators didn't dare act.
Soon, another call came from above, demanding results. After all, the college student suicide case had already caused a significant stir, and now there was a dark web murder countdown. They needed to produce something quickly, especially since they had already caught one of the members.
But Wynter didn't listen to anyone, her smile even carrying a hint of defiance. "Yes, the confidentiality principle. We won't be able to give you a report, and it has nothing to do with your position."
The investigators were terrified just listening to her. They wondered if she was planning to quit after handling this case. But the Special Unit was indeed powerful. There was no substantial accountability for her even after wrecking such chaos.
Wynter glanced at them. "No one is to handle Janielle before I return."
"She didn't have it easy, but she still attempted murder…" One spoke up hesitantly.
Wynter acknowledged this. "Keep an eye on her for now."
Janielle suddenly spoke as Wynter was about to leave. "You'll need to wear a mask if you plan to continue investigating. The sage has a high social status, and the website isn't just full of ordinary people. The way you're handling this now might cost you your position."
Janielle didn't know why Wynter was so bold—perhaps because she was too young. But she didn't want Wynter to lose her position because of her.
Wynter looked up, tossed her uniform onto the chair, and smiled. "About that, I'm just a part-timer here. If I lose my position, so be it."
The investigators were completely speechless. What kind of part-time job was this?
The death countdown couldn't stop. Wynter had prepared an AI-generated scene in advance, and it played out as scheduled. Even Malcolm didn't know he would be declared socially dead.
Wynter monitored the online heat on the website and locked onto most of the individuals with homicidal tendencies. Then, she began pinpointing their cities through data analysis.
Since this was a Sacrificial Human Formation, she needed to taunt the other party to complete the offering chain quickly.
The investigators pleaded earnestly, "Ms. Quinnell, I think this method is a bit risky. If you post this and the family truly believes it, what then? They'll definitely call the police and go to the scene. When that happens–-"
"Then you'll just have to act convincingly and not blow the cover," Wynter interrupted him while coding a program. She gestured toward Dalton with her chin. "Let Dalton lead you all in the act. His face is perfect for playing the main character."
Dalton, who had been named, also sensed that she was subtly mocking him.
Leo, hiding in the purple sugilite pendant, wanted to speak up. He was too worried about Wynter's earlier state. If it hadn't been for Dalton, Wynter would have truly gone off the deep end.
Now, hearing her speak like this, Leo realized that she must have noticed Dalton's uniqueness. Yet, she still dared to mock him even after realizing it.
Leo wondered if Dalton would get angry. Hence, he cautiously glanced toward Dalton.
To his surprise, Dalton lowered his gaze and smiled faintly with a hint of fondness. Only then did Leo remember that they were engaged. With that in mind, Leo shrank back into the purple sugilite pendant.
The investigators, however, took a deep breath. They were a serious organization! What main character was Wynter talking about? This was about the death countdown's impact!
"I'll lead them well." Dalton's voice was low and as pleasant as ever.
The investigators couldn't believe that Dalton had agreed to even the part about being the main character.
Wynter looked at Dalton. Though she had many questions, one thing remained unchanged from the beginning—she felt at ease whenever he was around.
In the dream she had before, his fate was an early death—a bizarre car accident that took him away. Wynter thought it was utter nonsense. She was thankful that she had intervened, and that Dalton was hers now.
Wynter couldn't help but smile when she sized Dalton up.
Dalton raised an eyebrow, tapping her forehead. "Tone down the look in your eyes."
It reminded him of the time she had taken him back to the mountain, with that same look in her eyes. Back then, he had followed her, perhaps because he didn't think anyone would ever have the audacity to take him in as a boy toy.
Monway University had just celebrated its centennial anniversary not long ago, and now, two terrible incidents had occurred in quick succession. It was truly a case of adding salt to the wound.
Jarred knocked the table. "From now on, I don't care what methods you use, you must suppress the discussion of this incident. If this issue isn't resolved, none of us here will have an easy time!"
With that, he stood up and left, leaving Floyd and the other directors behind.
Floyd stood up. "Everyone, you heard the principal. He's given us a strict order. We'll all be without a job if we don't suppress this discussion. Let's think of something and get moving."
One of the directors sighed. "Mr. Roly, how are we supposed to suppress this? The official announcement is lethal."
Another echoed the director's opinion, "It seems we're in for a tough time."
Floyd's voice was firm. "If there's no way, then find one. The incident has already happened. If we don't find a solution, it's over for us. Do you understand?"
…
The "romance scam" website was also in an uproar.
"Sheep is impressive. They actually succeeded, and even the official announcement confirmed it."
"Who would've thought? I would've assumed Sheep was just all talk without that announcement."
"Since Sheep succeeded, I'm going to make my move, too."
"Sheep is my idol from now on. I really want to see what Sheep looks like."
"Keep dreaming. You're biting off more than you can chew. Haha!"
Royston saw the announcement and smiled faintly. He gestured to the person beside him before speaking. "Sheep has finally taken this step. Ask her to come tomorrow for the holy prayer. Also, we're still short on offerings. Tell them to speed things up."
The subordinate replied quietly, "Understood, my lord. There's one more thing—Fox didn't complete their mission. They even tried to escape."
Royston stood up and made a gesture. "Turn Fox into an offering. We'll have the officials make another announcement. Let's make Colifernia lively again."
Those who could be used by him were the best. After all, it was easy to bring out the evil in people's hearts, but truly acting on it required taking that first step. Once taken, there would be no fear or worry afterward.
But if that step wasn't taken, they were nothing but useless pawns—and useless pawns could only serve as offerings.
