Recently, Yvonne had been working even harder at Pivotage to please Christopher. However, in secret, she never stopped gathering evidence of his crimes. Despite the difficulties and the ever-present risk of death, she was determined to walk this path.
Today was Yvonne’s monthly volunteer day at the orphanage. She woke up early, washed up, put on her volunteer uniform, and grabbed the gifts she had prepared for the children before hurrying out.
“Ms. Smith! You are here so early!”
“Good morning, Ms. Smith!”
“How have you been, Ms. Smith?”
The teachers and volunteers greeted Yvonne warmly. Here, she was the beloved center of attention. Yvonne responded to everyone's greetings and handed out the snacks she had made.
“Wow! Ms. Smith, you made these pineapple pies again! We love them so much!”
A young caretaker could not resist and took a bite, a look of bliss spreading across her face. “Ms. Smith, it’s a pity you can only come once a month. If you could come every week, or even every day, we would be so lucky!”
Yvonne smiled gently but felt a pang in her heart. She wished she could come more often, but she couldn’t. Her life was uncertain and unstable. If she suddenly stopped coming, it would be less painful for them if her visits were infrequent and detached.
“Ms. Smith, it’s about time. The children are waiting for you.” A teacher hurried over to remind her.
“Alright, I’m coming.”
...
This classroom was quieter than the others. Yvonne wrote on the blackboard with delicate, elegant handwriting, mirroring her own refined demeanor. The children diligently copied her words, the sound of pencils scratching on paper creating a peaceful atmosphere.
At that moment, a tall figure appeared silently at the back door of the classroom. Drew lazily leaned against the door frame.
Yvonne turned around, her slender, fair hands moving gracefully in the air as she made a sign. Drew’s pupils contracted, and his heartbeat quickened. He realized then that the children in this class were all deaf.
“Oh, Ms. Smith, he’s your friend? Alright, then. You two go ahead.” The teacher walked away, smiling knowingly.
In the quiet corridor, Yvonne and Drew stood with a ray of warm sunlight between them, gazing at each other. As he walked toward her, the sunlight highlighted his handsome features, and the breeze tousled his hair, making him look charming.
He stopped in front of her, their proximity almost unbearable. Drew’s charming lips curled teasingly. “Thank you for helping me out, Ms. Smith.”
“Why... Why are you here?” Yvonne pressed her back against the wall, her heart racing uncontrollably. She tried to calm herself, as if afraid he could hear it.
“Why do you think?” Drew leaned against the wall beside her head, his handsome, roguish face moving closer and his intense presence overwhelming her.
“Stop fooling around... I need to get back to my class. Let me go.” Yvonne's face flushed under his burning gaze, her body trembling lightly. It felt like a sparkling stone had been thrown into her calm heart, creating ripples.
Drew raised an eyebrow, his lips brushing against her flushed ear. “Then kiss me. Kiss me, and I’ll let you go.”
