Before Lane could utter a word, Dorothy flatly rejected him.
"Jeffrey, there's nothing I want to discuss with you."
"You'd prefer they hear about your past?"
Dorothy's posture noticeably stiffened. Was Jeffery threatening her?
He guessed that Dorothy hadn't shared her history with Everett with anyone else. He didn't know why, but he was sure she had her reasons and that they were enough to make her listen to him.
"What are you two talking about?" Lane asked as his eyes darted between Dorothy and Jeffrey.
Jeffrey smiled and said, “You might not know this, but Ms. Sanchez used to be involved with…”
“Enough!” Dorothy cut him off sharply and turned her gaze to Jeffrey. “We can talk, but let's go over there."
Jeffrey gave an 'OK' gesture with his hand. "Lane, you go ahead. Don't worry, I'll make sure she comes for dinner."
Lane had no idea what was going on.
He looked at Dorothy. Since she did not protest, he could only nod. "Okay, I'll wait for you."
As he turned and disappeared into the restaurant, Dorothy spoke in a cold voice, "Mr. Turner, I recall we have no quarrel. The Lopez family and Heather wanted me to stay away from Everett, and I did. Why are you here threatening me?"
Jeffrey pulled out a pack of cigarettes and lit one. "I'm just wondering how you got involved with Lane."
The word 'involved' had a certain implication.
Jeffrey was speechless. He hadn't expected Dorothy, after so many years, to have honed her wit and become deadly sharp.
"I know you're a good friend of Everett's, and you want him to be with Heather. But all of that has nothing to do with me now. As for your question, all I can tell you is that my goal is not to get back with Everett."
Jeffrey's cigarette ash fell to the ground, narrowly missing his hand.
He squinted at the woman standing before him. "Did you know he's getting married?"
"I know."
"And you don't care?"
"I don't."

Why didn't Jeffrey call Everett from the office? Lock his door instruct security to not let anyone in and speak to Everett on the phone? Or send him a text giving him a quick summary of what's up and that he's on his way over. That way when he runs into Heather on his way out he informs her Everett already knows....
The children's stories are si boring. This book is like torture. I've put in so much time I have to see this through but it's becoming more difficult....
Finish this already...
