Just as Karen was about to continue her thought, Dorothy's cell phone suddenly rang.
They both assumed it was Everett, and Dorothy even prepared herself to disconnect the call. However, the number on the screen wasn't his.
She hesitated for a moment before pressing the answer button.
A stranger's voice came through. It was a voice that Dorothy couldn't forget.
"Your mom passed away?"
It was Maxton Sanchez, her father.
"How did you know? I bet you're thrilled." Dorothy asked instinctively, then realized Heather must have told him.
"What kind of talk is that? We were still married once, you know. Where are you? I should pay my respects."
"No need!" Dorothy's voice was so sharp that it cut through the wind whistling across the deserted cemetery, making her sound even more mournful but still threatening. "I warn you, leave her alone, or else…"
Maxton chuckled. "Or what? What leverage do you have to be yelling at me now? Because you snagged a rich guy? I'm still your father, and you still carry my blood!"
"If I could, I'd give it back."
Who needed it?
In the past, Dorothy couldn't be bothered arguing with him because she felt every word was a waste. But today, Maxton had truly enraged her.
If he could make such callous comments now, he must have known about everything all along and done nothing to stop it. He even seemed pleased with the outcome.
Fine. Once she uncovered the truth, no one would be spared.
After ending the call, Karen looked at her and soothingly rubbed her back. "Calm down, Dorothy. Remember, you're pregnant, so you can't get upset."
As soon as the word 'pregnant' came out of her mouth, everyone fell silent.
Realizing her mistake, Karen quickly corrected herself. "I'm mainly worried about your health. Even if you've decided not to keep the baby, you still need to take care of yourself. After all, you and the baby are linked right now."

Why didn't Jeffrey call Everett from the office? Lock his door instruct security to not let anyone in and speak to Everett on the phone? Or send him a text giving him a quick summary of what's up and that he's on his way over. That way when he runs into Heather on his way out he informs her Everett already knows....
The children's stories are si boring. This book is like torture. I've put in so much time I have to see this through but it's becoming more difficult....
