The Billionaire's Sudden Bride novel Chapter 71

Summer’s POV

I couldn’t help smiling as Ruby demonstrated how to use the recording equipment for what felt like the tenth time. Her genuine concern warmed my heart in a way my own family never managed anymore,

What are you smiling about?Ruby’s sharp voice cut through my dalk thoughts. This is serious! Listen to me carefully!

I carefully tucked the recording device into my purse, doublechecking the hidden camera. I know, I know. Don’t worry, I’ll be careful! The words came out softer than intended as emotion threatened to overwhelm me. How did I get so lucky to have a friend like Ruby? While my own sister plotted behind my back, here was Ruy, going above and beyond to protect me.

Ruby’s frown deepened as she studied my face. Fine, call me overprotective. But you have to be extra careful, especially with drinks. Don’t consume anything they offer you.

I understand. The weight of the recording equipment felt impossibly heavy in my bag, a physical reminder of how far things had fallen. That I needed to secretly record a meeting with my own family

They’re here!Ruby’s whispered urgently. We watched as Richard, Elizabeth, and Victoria swept through the hotel’s grand entrance, my sister’s perfect posture a stark contrast to our mother’s agitated movements.

That bitch!Ruby muttered, her voice thick with disgust.

I managed a bitter smile, patting her shoulder. I should head in.It’s almost funny, I thought, watching Victoria’s perfect posture as she disappeared into the hotel. My sister walks like she’s still on a movie set, always performing. The realization brought more sadness than anger now when had we become such strangers?

Ruby’s hand shot out, gripping my arm. Wait! Let’s wait for Charles Windsor to arrive first!

I shook my head firmly. No time. I’ve met Charles before he’s more complicated than he appears. I need to plant these devices before he gets here!

Okay!Ruby nodded, Go on then, I’ll be in the next room!

My phone’s sudden buzz made us both jump. Elizabeth’s name flashed across the screen, making my stomach clench.

Where are you?My mother’s sharp voice carried its usual note of displeasure. Summer, don’t try anything clever. You must come.

It’s almost seven.

I forced my voice to remain steady despite how my hands shook. Almost there. Which room?

The Plaza, room 3702. Come up immediately.

The elevator ride to the 37th floor felt endless. Each floor that passed brought me closer to whatever trap they’d set. My reflection in the mirrored walls looked pale but determined. I’m not that naive girl anymore, I reminded myself. The one who believed family meant unconditional love, who thought Victoria’s cruelty was just sisterly teasing, who trusted Elizabeth’s maternal facade. Brandon’s strength seemed to flow through me just thinking about him. And now I had Ruby too proof that real love didn’t need manipulation or threats.

As I approached room 3702, voices carried clearly through the heavy door.

Mom, didn’t you say she was coming?Victoria’s anxious tone made me pause. What if she changed her mind?

Elizabeth’s cold laugh sent shivers down my spine. Impossible. That stupid girl wouldn’t dare. Or did you forget about the video I

have?

Who’s out there? Richard’s voice boomed suddenly. Open the door!

I took a deep breath, squared my shoulders, and pushed open the door. Victoria immediately rushed forward, her perfect smile firmly in place. Summer, you came!

I stepped back before she could touch me, watching her expression Elter slightly.

Summer, she tried again, her voice dripping with fake concern, I know you’re still angry, but

Angry?I cut her off, keeping my voice deliberately light. Why would I be angry? What have you done that’s worth getting angry

about?

Victoria’s perfect mask cracked just slightly as she shot a helpless look at Elizabeth.

Our mother slammed her hand on the table, making the crystal glasses rattle. Watch your attitude! What right do you have to be angry with your sister? We should be the angry ones!

I met her gaze steadily, refusing to flinch. Something in my expression must have startled her because she faltered for just a moment before recovering her usual venom.

Don’t blame us for being harsh, Elizabeth’s voice dripped with false concern. You know the Windsors position on Wall Street. Charles Windsor showing interest in you is a blessing you don’t deserve. Don’t be ungrateful.

Is that so?I turned to Richard, who’d been suspiciously quiet. Father thinks I’m being ungrateful too?

His uncomfortable silence spoke volumes.

I let my gaze sweep the suite, noting potential places to plant the recording device while keeping my tone casual. A blessing? How thoughtful of you, Mother! Such a golden opportunity, and instead of saving it for your beloved Victoria, you’re giving it to your disappointing younger daughter. How very generous of you!

You ungrateful little- Elizabeth’s face contorted with rage. I’m your mother! Do

Of course not,I couldn’t keep the bitterness from my voice. You didn’t drug my forcing me here today.

you think I’d harm you?

tea, you didn’t film me, and you’re not the one

A lazy drawl from the doorway made my blood run cold. Long time no see, Summer.

Charles Windsor leaned against the doorframe with casual elegance, his presence immediately dominating the room. Elizabeth and Richard scrambled to their feet. Mr. Windsor, please come in!
