After hanging up the phone, Eloise sank into her thoughts.
Could he really be so indifferent?
No way!
After all, they did have some fiery times together, and Harvey did once shower her with affection.
Harvey did like her, right?
Eloise collected herself and was ready to start her car when Harvey’s call came through.
She answered the phone, her voice as soft as ever.
“Harvey.”
On the other end, Harvey seemed taken aback by her gentle tone.
It was then that he realized that he hadn't seen her much in almost a week. She was already asleep when he got home late and was still asleep when he left early.
Harvey's voice came out husky. "Where are you?"
"I'm heading home."
Harvey glanced at his watch. "I'll be home later for dinner; could you cook something?"
Eloise was silent for a few seconds and then agreed.
After hanging up, she gently stroked her phone, her emotions a jumbled mess.
Considering their current relationship, it would have been normal for him to let her rest in bed. But asking her to cook seemed a bit much.
The sweet domestic life was like a sugar-coated poison pill, and Eloise had once willingly swallowed it.
But now he was chasing his dream lover from his youth.
And she, Eloise, was helpless.
There was no housekeeper at home, so Eloise went to the supermarket to get some groceries.
After paying, a few young guys at the entrance stuffed her with several newspapers.
"This is the preview edition of our city evening paper; have a look."
"There's all kinds of juicy gossip; it’s really spicy."
...
Eloise didn't pay it any mind, casually tossing the newspapers into her shopping bag and into the trunk.
When she got home and opened the shopping bag to prepare dinner, she realized that the front-page headlines of those newspapers were all about Harvey.
More accurately, they were about Harvey and Joan's scandal.
They happened to meet at a party in Sydney.
In the hotel lobby, Joan was in a black evening dress, and her slender fingers were pulling at Harvey's sleeve. The redness in the corners of her eyes showed that she had just cried, but she was still stubbornly staring at the man in front of her.
Harvey slightly turned, and the camera only captured half of his face, but Eloise could see the resentment in his eyes and also sympathy.
...
Eloise stared at it for a long time.
By the time she snapped out of it, she felt a bit stiff, and her muscles ached.
Eloise gently blinked.
Thankfully, her feelings for Harvey were still in the early stages, so she could still control her heart.
She tossed the newspaper aside and then began to prepare dinner.
Harvey liked slightly sour food, but his stomach wasn't good.
Eloise cooked him lemon-seasoned fish, stewed mushroom soup, and made seafood cream pasta.
By the time she was done, it was almost 7 o'clock.
He still hadn't come back.
As Eloise was debating whether to call him, Harvey's call came in.
His voice on the phone was pleasant.
"Eloise, I won't be back for dinner tonight. I have a gathering I need to attend, so I'll be home later."
Eloise wasn't angry; she just calmly said, "If you drink, get a designated driver."
Harvey was silent for a while, and finally he replied. "Okay."
After he hung up, Eloise looked at the food on the table and pondered for a long time.
After a while, she slowly sat down, quietly eating alone.
There was a lot of food left, so she packed it up, intending to feed the stray dog downstairs after she finished her chores.
...
When Harvey came back, it wasn't too late.
It was about 10:30 in the evening.
He sat down in the dining room, casually flipping through a newspaper while saying, "Make me a pizza."
After he said that, his gaze suddenly froze.
The newspapers in his hand were all about his scandal with Joan; a few were even taken in the hotel, looking quite intimate.
He looked at Eloise, frowning.
Eloise lightly said, "They stuffed it into my bag when I was grocery shopping."
Harvey put down the newspaper.
He remembered how she looked just now downstairs; she really didn't seem to care, and she seemed to be doing fine during the week that he didn't contact her.
Even though it was he who made headlines with his ex, Harvey still wanted to pick on Eloise.
He scoffed. "Don't you wanna ask?"
His accusing tone made Eloise feel uneasy.
She gave a small smile and said, "Don't sweat it, Attorney Horigan. I won't go nosing around your private life. Whoever you hang out with or rekindle old flames with doesn’t concern me. That’s your business.”
Harvey lit a cigarette, looking at her with a smirk on his face.
Eloise felt like she just didn’t care anymore.
She said clearly, “As for whether I care or not, that’s my business!”
Harvey thought Eloise was one hell of a woman.
Her words were sharp, and she didn't take crap from anyone.
He swallowed a couple of times, then told her to go cook.
Eloise was still wearing his coat, but she went back to the bedroom to change into something more suitable for cooking. As she prepared the meal, Harvey watched her from behind.
Eloise had a killer body; even when she was cooking, her back was perfectly straight.
Her chestnut hair was tied up, revealing a delicate neck, not to mention her incredibly long legs. Harvey hadn't felt this way in a long time; his heart was pounding.
Just as he was about to walk into the kitchen, Eloise's phone on the dining table lit up.
It was a message from Veronica.
The range hood in the kitchen was too loud, so Eloise didn't hear the phone ring.
For some reason, Harvey picked up her phone, opened Facebook, and then saw the video Veronica had sent earlier.
It was a video of him at Joan's place tonight.
