Although Kevan really wanted her to, he did not dare push his luck when he saw Larissa's face darkening. He reached over Aster's head and swiped the tissue out of Larissa's hand, hastily rubbing it over his face.
"All done." He raised his hand and threw the crumpled tissue into a trash can that was a few feet away in a perfect arc.
Yet another round of exclamations sounded around them, and even Larissa had to look at him in a whole new light.
Aster clung to Kevan even more and asked him with puppy-dog eyes, "Daddy, when will you teach me how to shoot hoops?"
Kevan replied without hesitation, "When you're resting this weekend."
Aster immediately leaped three feet into the air with delight and stuck out his pinky. "That's a promise!"
Larissa watched this while her heart sank slowly.
…
Having lost some momentum in the first activity, Kevan and Aster got Larissa to join in on every other activity that they could participate in to gain more points, and they gave their all in every activity.
Larissa had never taken the competitions seriously, having planned to pick a few easy and relaxing activities to participate in to bond with her son, but their passion caused her to cultivate a fighting spirit too—she did not want to hold them back and cause them to miss out on the prize that they should have rightfully gotten.
The truth was, most parents didn't share the same sentiments as Larissa. They were not very interested in the prize. Therefore, Larissa's family had very little competition. In the end, they got first place as they wished, and received the prize onstage in front of everyone.
"No!" Having overheard their conversation, Aster protested strongly against it. "No way! I want to go to Kailadon with Daddy and Mommy!"
The moment he said that, Larissa and the other mother were stuck in an awkward situation. The mother quickly said, "Forget it then. If the kid wants to go, well, we can't say no to that, can we?"
Larissa frowned hard and grabbed Aster's hand.
"I'll talk to him for a bit and give you an answer later." She smiled apologetically as she led Aster to a quiet corner.
Kevan was trapped by a group of parents he had met at work before, and he watched helplessly as Larissa took Aster away with an absolutely dark look on her face. He was anxious but could do nothing about it.
