If Larissa herself had not necessarily met Aster's biological father, who said Wendy would even know about him? Aster's question made her a little frantic, and she asked him in return, "Why are you asking about this?"
"I want to find my daddy," Aster said seriously, and Wendy was shocked. Her first reaction was to inform Larissa, but she still had to deal with Aster for now.
"Why are you suddenly thinking about finding your daddy?"
This kid, having grown up to his current age, had never asked for his father before today. So … what on earth has happened now?
"Because I want to." Aster bit his lip, some stubbornness shining through his forlornness. He had never spoken to Wendy like this before. If it were not for the fact that he was only five, Wendy would have thought that he was already at his rebellious stage.
"Well … you gotta have a reason for wanting to do something?" She tried to communicate properly with him.
Aster was quiet for a while before he mumbled, "I … don't want Mommy to have it so hard anymore." His voice was very small, but it shocked Wendy so much that she teared up.
"Oh, Aster …" She gazed at his little face sadly on the screen. "Godma can understand how you feel …"
The truth was, she had tried to persuade Larissa numerous times to find another trustworthy man she could lean on so that she could live life a little easier, just as Aster had. But Larissa refused no matter what. The two failed marriages from before seemed to have dealt quite a heavy blow to her, so much so that she refused to invest in feelings and relationships anymore, even for just the tiniest bit.
She always said that having Aster was enough. However, this was clearly not enough for Aster. Otherwise, Aster would not specially make this call to find her either.
"But did you talk to your mommy about wanting to find your daddy?" Wendy asked.
This kid was young, but he was an obstinate brat indeed. No amount of cajoling could drag him out of something he had made his mind up to do.
Wendy gave up on trying to stop him, but asked him curiously, "How are you going to find your daddy? You haven't even seen him before."
"That's why I'm asking you!" Aster said. "You're my mommy's bestest friend. You'll definitely know who my daddy is, right?"
Wendy was feeling rather guilty from the hopeful stare that he was giving him as well as somewhat embarrassed.
"I …" Although she did not really want to admit it, she had no choice but to say, "I actually don't know who your daddy is."
