Chapter 38
Chapter 38
Just then. Jeremy stepped out of the house. Dani looked up and smiled at him. “Mr. Adler, I wanted to check on Yvonne. I hope I’m not intruding.”
She had wanted to visit earlier but hesitated, worried the Adlers might not appreciate it. After all. Yvonne was their child now. She didn’t want to overstep.
Jeremy assured her that it was fine. He walked over, bent down, and picked up the bamboo basket on the ground. He was surprised when he felt something moving inside. A moment later, a look of delight crossed his face as he realized what it might be.
The three of them went into the living room, where Dani pulled back the floral cloth covering the basket, revealing a chubby little puppy inside.
“A few days ago, one of the volunteers mentioned you came by the orphanage and spent some time with Bucky. I thought you might want a puppy, so I brought one with me today,” Dani explained, then added cautiously. “If you don’t want it. I can take it back
Yvonne crouched down and poked the puppy’s head with her tiny finger. The puppy let out a soft whimper, its round, black eyes looking up at her adorably.
“Jeremy.” Yvonne turned to her brother, her eyes pleading.
Jeremy couldn’t say no. He had wanted a puppy ever since his visit to the orphanage. He nodded at Yvonne, giving her the green light.
The little girl beamed and turned to Dani excitedly. “We can keep it! Jeremy said yes!”
The puppy, as if sensing its future life of luxury, wiggled around in the basket.
Jeremy pulled out his phone. I’ll call the driver to pick up some supplies for the puppy. We can go to the pet store this weekend to get everything else it needs.”
“Okay!”
After Jeremy stepped out to make the call, Dani motioned for Yvonne to come closer. She pulled the little girl into her arms and spoke in a hushed, serious tone.
“Yvonne, there’s something else I need to tell you.”
Yvonne looked up at her with wide, innocent eyes.
“Have you seen Marian?”
Yvonne nodded slowly, her voice soft. “Yes, I have.”
Dani’s expression grew more troubled. “Marian. she’s changed. You need to be careful around her. And I think she took your necklace.”
Yvonne’s eyes widened. “My necklace?”
Dani nodded. “I don’t know why she took it, but that necklace is important. It’s tied to your past. When I found you, you were wearing it. If you get the chance, you need to get it back.”
“…I understand. Dani… Yvonne murmured.
Dani sighed, guilt weighing heavily on her. She couldn’t reach the Yates family, and she was too afraid to bring this up with

the Adlers. The Yates were wealthy, and she didn’t want the Adlers to think she was stirring up trouble.
She had an entire orphanage to care for and couldn’t afford to take risks. All she could do was hope Yvonne would find the right moment to tell her new family about the necklace.
Yvonne didn’t fully grasp what Dani was thinking, but she could sense her unease. She wrapped her arms around Dani ina comforting hug
Jeremy returned after finishing his call. When he
w Yvonne clinging to Dani, he paused for a moment To Yvonne, Dani was like a mother. The thought made Jeremy speak up sincerely.
“Yonne starts kindergarten now and gets home by five. If you have time, you’re welcome to visit her whenever you’d like.”
Hearing this, Yvonne muzzled against Dani happily. “Dani, you should come see me more often!”
Dani smiled. relieved. Jeremy’s words confirmed that Yvonne was doing well in the Adler household.
As they chatted, Dani glanced outside and noticed the sky darkening. It was time for her to leave. Before she left, she pulled a small USB drive from her pocket and handed it to Jeremy.
“I don’t know why you came to the orphanage that day, but this USB contains some surveillance footage that’s important for Yvonne. Dani said, her eyes locking with Jeremy’s.
A flicker of understanding passed through Jeremy’s eyes. He already had an idea of what was on the drive.
Dani’s emotions were tangled. She knew that if the Yates family saw this footage. Marian might be sent back to the
orphanage. Marian had been under her care since she was a baby, and Dani couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for her. She hesitated, then pleaded with Jeremy.
“If Marian stops bullying Yvonne and doesn’t hurt anyone else… could you not show this footage to the Yates family?”
Jeremy was taken aback but nodded calmly. “Alright.”
After Dani left, the driver returned with the puppy supplies. Yvonne was busy setting up the puppy’s bed and quickly forgot about the earlier conversation.
By nine that evening. Jeremy was back in his room. He closed the door, plugged the USB into his computer, and opened the files. There were several folders, and just the sheer number made Jeremy frown.
He clicked on one file, which turned out to be footage from the day the Yates family came to pick up Yvonne. The video showed the hallway outside the dormitory at around six in the morning. Two little girls walked out, one after the other. Yvonne was trailing behind, looking clueless. She reached out to grab Marian’s hand, but Marian elbowed her away.
Jeremy’s blood boiled. Wait, what? Marian’s the one crying about being bullied?‘
From what he could see, Marian was the one throwing the punches! She shoved Yvonne hard enough to send her stumbling.
