Nell never knew that Cathy was in the capital before this, but now that she did, how could she let her mother live in someone else’s territory?
Thus, she pulled Cathy and whispered, “Mom, if you don’t mind, why don’t you stay with us these few days?”
Cathy was stunned and confused. “Why would I stay with you?”
Nell laughed. “Look at you, how can you be confused? I’m your daughter. When a mom visits her daughter’s city, where else would she stay besides with her daughter?”
Cathy was at a loss. It seemed like she understood Nell’s words but she was hesitant at the same time.
Sean frowned.
He said in a low voice, “There’s no need. I know you two mean well, but Cathy’s mind hasn’t fully recovered yet. She’s used to living here, so it won’t be good to change the environment since it would easily affect her mood.”
Nell was dumbfounded, not quite understanding of Sean’s meaning.
“But this is Mr. Donnelly’s manor, right? Wouldn't living in Mr. Donnelly’s manor affect her mood too?”
Sean’s frown deepened. However, upon thinking of her relationship with Cathy, he patiently explained, “Although this is Mr. Donnelly’s manor, he has set aside a small courtyard for us, so he won’t bother us if we just stay there. However, your Leith residence is big and complicated, so I’m worried that Cathy won’t be used to it. We’d rather not.”
Nell’s face sank.
“Mr. Miller, I think you’ve misunderstood. Although the Leith residence is big, there’s nothing complicated about it. Besides…”
She paused and looked at Cathy before continuing, “Mom, I actually have two children now, and I have a third one in my belly. Don’t you want to see your grandchildren?”
Cathy was stunned but soon reacted to the joyous news.
She revealed a smile and looked at Nell’s stomach.
“You’re pregnant? Congratulations, that’s really great, but I…”
Forcing a smile, she finally refused. “I don’t want to go, Nelly. How about… nevermind. As for the grandchildren, can I see them next time instead?”
Nell’s brows furrowed imperceptibly.
She felt Cathy’s rejection, but she did not understand the reason.
So she pursed her lips and sighed. “Well, since you insist, I won’t force you.”
Then, she handed Cathy’s handbag to her.
“We’ll part ways here. I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow morning.”
With a nod, Cathy told her to drive slowly before walking into the manor with Sean.
Nell and Gideon stood there, watching their silhouettes disappear completely before leaving.
On the way home, Nell sat in the car quietly, not saying a word.
Gideon reached out to hold her hand and asked, “What’s on your mind?”
Nell said softly, “I’m wondering how my mom’s situation is going to get better.”
Gideon raised his brows.
“What do you mean? Didn’t you say you wouldn’t force her to remember the past?”
“Nell, I heard that you agreed to Mr. Donnelly’s request and decided to cooperate with him?”
Nell smiled. “Didn’t I already tell you about this before? Why are you still so surprised?”
Jean’s voice was ecstatic. “A verbal promise is a verbal promise. Who knows if you’ll change your mind? Now that you’ve said so to Mr. Donnelly, it was the hammer that hit the last nail on the coffin. Otherwise, if news spread that the president of Anning International didn’t keep her word, wouldn’t others think that it’s hilarious?”
Nell smiled exasperatedly at Jean’s bright tone.
All of a sudden, Jean changed the topic. “By the way, Nelly, that… How are you with Ms. Morrison, your foster mother?”
Nell paused and asked warily, “Why are you asking that?”
Jean laughed dryly. “I’m just concerned about you. You’re my nephew and we’re all part of the Leith family. Of course, I have to ask if you’re acknowledging her as family.”
Nell pursed her lips and said softly, “She doesn’t reject me now, but she still doesn’t remember me. Aunt, please keep this matter a secret for me and don’t make it public. Don’t tell anyone either.”
Jean was silent for two seconds.
Then, she said in an awkward tone, “Okay, I know. Don’t worry, I’m not one of those people with big mouths.”
Nell smiled silently and thought to herself, ‘If you don’t have a big mouth, then no one has a big mouth’.
However, Jean already knew about this matter, so Nell could not hide it even if she wanted to.
Thus, she could only try her best to explain. Whether or not Jean listened to her was not something she could control.
Nell told her roughly when they would be leaving for Country T and what Jean needed to prepare during this period of time before she hung up the phone.
