Grandpa Brooks sneered and a hint of mockery crossed his face. "I haven't believed it since many decades ago. All I care about now is living happily and comfortably. I don't think about anything else. Even if I go to hell after death, I don't give a damn!"
As soon as he said this, Gregory was infuriated.
Nell frowned too and asked, "Grandpa, so you’re saying you’re unwilling to help?"
The old man looked at her with a smile and said, "I really don't have the thing you want. If you want my life, I'm just an old man, so if you can take it then I don't care either."
"Do you really f*cking think that I won't dare to kill you?!"
Soon after, Gregory rushed up and grabbed the old man by the collar.
Everyone was shocked, but Vickie hurriedly went up and grabbed his arm, saying, "Gregory, don't be impulsive."
However, Gregory had put up with this old man for a long time, and at this point, how was he willing to put up with him more?
Gregory pulled out a gun, putting it to the old man’s head. He gritted his teeth and said, "Do you believe I'll shoot you?"
Grandpa Brooks narrowed his eyes and looked at him.
Even then, his face remained unchanged at this point as he still had on that smug fearless look and a mocking smile was plastered on his face.
"Want to kill me, huh? If I die, you’ll never be able to get the Arcane Jade. You and the little lady you love will just have to die. No one can save her! Hahahahahahaha…”
Like a maniac, the old man laughed and the veins on Gregory's forehead were so tense. He glared at the old man. All he wanted was to pull the trigger right away.
Nell panicked when she saw the situation unfold. She feared that, in a fit of rage, he would really kill Grandpa Brooks.
So she hurriedly stepped forward to stop him and said, "Gregory, don't do anything foolish."
Vickie also tugged on Gregory's sleeve as she whispered, "He’s not afraid of death. You can't threaten him like this. Calm down."
Gregory still had some sense in him. After all, this matter concerned Vickie's life, so he did not dare to take this risk.
Eventually, he put the gun down begrudgingly.
Nell gave Gideon a wink, signaling that he should take Gregory out to calm him down first.
Gideon and Nell had a deep understanding of each other, so he knew what she meant and he immediately took Gregory out.
Only once they left did Nell then turn back and look at Grandpa Brooks seriously.
Grandpa Brooks’s clothes were wrinkled because Gregory grabbed a hold of him just now, hence at this time, he was smoothing out the creases. He was a dying old man yet he was still so particular about his dressing.
When he was done straightening his clothes, the old man snorted and put more tobacco into his pipe.
Nell whispered to Vickie, telling her that she should leave first as well.
After Vickie left the room, Nell lifted her hand and took out a lighter to light up the old man’s pipe.
The old man jerked as looked at her with his eyebrows raised.
Her face was impassive, with no hint of trying to please or flatter him, and neither was she angry.
The old man sneered before he lowered his head and allowed her to light up the pipe for him.
When the pipe was lit, he inhaled deeply and leaned back against the chair languidly. He looked at Nell and said, "Don’t think that you can change my mind just because you stayed back and tried to please me. I already told you, I don’t have it. No matter how much you try to persuade me, I still won’t give it to you.”
"What I’m saying is that the jade's not with you anymore, but with your great-granddaughter, isn't it?"
The old man's face turned grim for a moment.
"Nonsense! She had nothing on her when she left, and there's no way I could’ve given it to her!"
"Oh? But didn't the rumors say that she just vanished? If she vanished out of the blue, how did you know that she had nothing on her?"
"I…”
Caught off guard, the old man let his mouth slip. He only realized later that she was trying to get something out of him, so all of a sudden, his face turned red with frustration.
"Ha! You little girl. You’ve got some tricks up your sleeve. You’re similar to Old Madam Quinton back then. But if you’re trying to trick me, you still have a long way to go. Let me tell you. When we were out on the streets, you weren't even born yet, so put away that little bit of cleverness of yours as soon as possible. I won't fall for it."
Nell shook her head.
"I wasn’t trying to trick you. In fact, up to now, you’re not willing to give us the jade, so I don't need to talk nonsense with you anymore. But I think that in this world, some things aren’t black and white or necessarily opposed to each other.
“You want to protect your great-granddaughter, and we want to find the Arcane Jade to save Vickie's life. There’s no conflict between the two.”
Grandpa Brooks' face was very glum.
However, Nell continued, "I don't know what happened to you that made your great-granddaughter vanish so suddenly, but I know that this matter must have something to do with the Arcane Jade. If my guess is correct, she isn’t missing, but deliberately hidden, right? Someone told you that others would come looking for this treasure in the near future, or told you something else that made you determined not to give it to us, didn't they?"
After she finished her speech, the old man looked a little perplexed.
He really did not expect that the thoughts he had concealed so deeply would be so easily guessed by a little girl like her.
