That someone seemed to be an aged man but Shimon had never met him before in all the years he had been in the Flinders family.
The person greeted him with an amiable smile. “You must be Mr. Shimon Flinders?”
Amid his surprise, Shimon could not recall seeing this person before. Were the people around Louis replaced by someone else?
Nevertheless, he only dared to play these thoughts in his mind and was without the guts to question out loud.
Shimon nodded in response. “Yes.”
“The master has been waiting for you. Please follow me.”
The person led him all the way into the estate on the island.
Because it was already dark, Shimon could not remember the way and only had a vague feeling that there were many turns made, similar to walking through a maze. It was a completely different pathway taken than when he met Louis the last time.
Despite the growing curiosity, Shimon suppressed the urge to ask.
The duo walked into a quaint estate and crossed another winding path for a long while before they arrived before a carved wooden door.
Standing outside the door, the elder shouted, “Master, Mr. Shimon Flinders is here.”
A man’s clear voice was heard from the inside. “Come in.”
Shimon was in shock.
This was not Louis’ voice.
Louis was old, pushing sixty and even if he cared for his health, his voice still bore a husky croak.
However, the voice Shimon heard was charming and clear, like fresh spring water among the mountains. It sank into his heart with a thud.
Bracing himself, he followed the elder into the house.
The house was heavy with the aroma of sandalwood but instead of overwhelming the senses, it reflected a hint of indifference and peace to the room.
In a corner of the house, towards the east, sat a man.
The man appeared quite young, probably younger than Shimon by two years. He was quite good-looking, the type that was mature and refined. He had a rather unspeakably mysterious presence to him.
The elder brought him over.
“Master.”
“You can leave.”
Jeff instructed.
Giving a nod, the elder turned and departed.
With only Jeff and Shimon in the house, Shimon felt a little awkward. He did not know who this man was, nor the reason why they brought him here.
Out of instinct, Shimon guarded the box containing the Arcane Jade while staring at Jeff on high alert.
“You are...”
With smiling eyes, Jeff lifted his head and gazed at him.
“You don’t know me.”
Shimon was taken aback.
Following the wave of Jeff’s arm, a figure emerged from the curtains beside.
Shimon was in for a shock.
This person was none other than the current patriarch of the Flinders family, Louis Flinders.
“Patriarch, you-you...”
By now, Shimon’s head was spinning.
He still had no idea what Louis had up his sleeve.
Louis smiled. “Shimon, come. Let me introduce you to this gentleman here. He is Jeff Flinders, the real leader behind the Flinders family.”
Shimon was completely dumbstruck.
Jeff Flinders? The real leader?
Struck by a thought, his mind flew back to the words Gregory said to him when he looked for the latter today.
The origins of the family were written on the house rules.
To put it into words, the Flinders family were once aristocrats beyond the commoners’ reach some time ago.
This was fairly long ago, dating back to a millennium.
During that time, the continent was still in the pre-gunpowder era and there, the ruler was from a family by the last name, Hellen.
Different from other dynasties, every venerated emperor that came from the Hellen family was a female.
During that era, they were called empresses.
The real person at the helm was not the empress, but rather the grand chancellor.
The empress acted more like a totem, a symbol, a face that the citizens respected and admired.
The grand chancellor was the one who actually governed the land, keeping it peaceful.
Everyone respected and revered the grand chancellor, more than the empress.
Hence, then came the tradition of the empress claiming to be the ruler while the grand chancellor played second to her. In other words, the grand chancellor was actually in control of the throne.
Coincidentally, the Flinder family were the last grand chancellors of that time.
That dynasty died in the hands of the Flinders family. A lot of records in ancient books and rumors among the people depicted all kinds of theories.
Nonetheless, there was not a peep about that part of history within the Flinders family’s house rules. It was rarely brought up.
Amazingly, the era may have ended but the Flinders family did not perish with it.
Apart from that, the Flinders family disappeared for two centuries before making it back to the history books in an intriguing manner.
For years, the Flinders family had engaged in business, politics, military, etc.
They had bore witness to countless unions, separations, war, massacre, beauty, and peace.
The world may be ever-changing but the Flinders family withstood the test of time and continued to grow in strength and lurked deeper and deeper to the dark.
The Flinders family was like a huge tree. It exposed a magnificent crown that was enough to instill fear in people while the roots buried underneath were more astounding.
