’Why did I come here? What made me come all the way here to my country when I could have been sitting in a huge office and being revered by others?’
As she pondered over what Diamond had just dropped on them earlier, Kiara asked herself.
Kiara came from a family where her parents and elders loved their boys so much as if those boys popped out of nowhere and not in their mothers’ wombs.
They were born from females, and yet the elders looked down on all female youngsters.
She had always hated how patriarchal her family was. And what irritated her was that even her mother was just like the rest of them.
She didn’t know whether it was just being her mother trying to fit it or what, but the fact that her mother treated her son so well, as if she and her sisters didn’t exist, didn’t sit well with her.
When she was young, what words didn’t she hear from her mother, father and grandparents?
She witnessed her sisters being forced to drop out of school, forced to work early when they could have been going to school and furthering their studies.
Her brother was literally raised by the sisters and, as she watched all that, she vowed that she wouldn’t allow herself to walk down the same path. And fortunately, she escaped that path.
Forced to stop studying and follow her sisters’ path, Kiara had a huge argument with her family back then.
She still remembered how her father beat her up with a belt and her body was swollen for days. However, she refused to be taken advantage of. As a result, her grandparents, who only knew how to spoil her father and brother, decided to kick her out of the family.
They thought that she would cower and come back to her senses, but when that choice was given to her, she readily accepted.
Rather than being in a family which didn’t accept her, Kiara decided to separate from them. One day she was going to be all-powerful and prove to them that women were human beings as well. That she could make it.
She was going to make them regret it.
She was in secondary school back then, and that was how she met Nancy. Despite Kiara staying at a foster home back then, Nancy became her bosom friend.
Kiara worked and studied hard. And when she passed at ’A’ Level, form 6 and was ready to go to university, she got a scholarship to go abroad where she studied law and other related courses.
She started working at a firm when she was still studying and by the time she was done with her studies; she had already made a name for herself.
For several years, she left a stamp of her name by winning nearly every case she took, since she lost a few in the process. A person can’t always win all the time.
However, before 2078 ended, something horrible happened.
A senior partner in the firm she was working for suddenly proposed to her to make her a senior partner. That was something that she had been working hard for a long time.
