Elisa teased the secretary, “Do you want to get married, Helen? I can introduce some guys to you. I guarantee you’ll be happy for the rest of your life.”
Helen was a young, fresh graduate and was recently hired as Serenity’s secretary.
Helen refused politely. “Thank you, Ms. Stone. However, I’ve been dating my boyfriend since I was in uni. We’re in a steady relationship, and I have no thoughts of breaking up.”
“Where does your boyfriend work?” Elisa asked.
“He recently got a job at a small company. I don’t know if he’ll stay for long. He said his remuneration package isn’t as good as mine.”
Upon mentioning her boyfriend’s job, Helen's smiling expression turned into worry.
She had a good relationship with him. However, he had not gotten any good job offers but still liked comparing himself with her.
He believed that as a man, his salary could not be less than that of his partner.
He found it embarrassing.
Nevertheless, just like Helen, he was a fresh graduate without much experience or capabilities. Being able to get a job related to his studies was good enough. Many others usually end up working in a different industry than what they studied in university.
Why be disappointed when one could land a job that could keep oneself afloat?
While there was a surplus of fresh graduates, good job opportunities were scarce.
There would be many competitors interviewing for companies with good benefits and reputations. While Helen’s boyfriend wanted to join mega-corporations, he could not stand out in the sea of fresh graduates. In the end, he had to settle for a small company.
Naturally, the benefits a small company could offer were incomparable to Helen’s—her boss being the missus of the York family.
The two other co-founders came from strong families as well.
“Why do you ask? Do you want to treat Sonny and me to a meal?” Serenity asked with a smile.
Elisa laughed. “Even if I did, you two wouldn’t come. I just miss Sonny. Why don’t we have a barbecue tonight? Perfect for cold weather.”
After thinking about it, Serenity replied, “I don’t know if Zachary is free tonight. I’ll let you know after asking him.”
“I knew it. You can’t even give me an immediate answer.”
Serenity smiled. “If we can’t make it, you and Remy can have a candlelit dinner by yourselves. How romantic is that?”
“We’ve had candlelit dinners many times. It gets less romantic if we overdo it.”
Serenity said, “What a show-off. I’m envious. I need to leave. Sonny will blame me for being late again.”
