“Don’t rush yourself. Just take it easy. You have made great progress. Many people like you find it hard to stand up on their own. You’re amazing that you can take a couple of steps. Don’t push yourself too hard. Take care of yourself. Nothing is more important than your health.”
Liberty wheeled him to the lawn and added, “You can try to walk on the grass. Even if you fall, it won’t hurt as much.”
Back at the Lewises’ residence, Duncan usually practiced walking on grass too.
Duncan lifted his head and looked at her before uttering, “I will fall, and I won’t look good falling. Don’t laugh at me, Liberty. Don’t feel sorry for me either. It’s the pain I have to go through to get better.”
Liberty knew he had a strong pride, so she nodded and replied, “I won’t laugh at you. If you feel my presence here is giving you a lot of pressure, I can leave.”
“It’s okay. It gives me pressure and motivation when you are here. I will hang in there for you.”
If it was not for Liberty and to bring her happiness, Duncan would not have gotten a grip on himself so quickly and tried to get back on his feet.
Maybe he would have given up on himself right after the accident.
At the time, Duncan was in despair, thinking he would have to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.
The first thing to go through his mind was that he did not want to burden Liberty. He tried to force Liberty to stay away and even hate him.
Liberty did not stay away.
She said she did not love him and would not accept his feelings, but she was not heartless. Even if he snapped at her and deliberately made things difficult for her, she still visited him at the hospital and took care of him every day.
Liberty claimed to have received payment from his mother. Duncan knew that his mother wanted to pay Liberty, but Liberty would not accept the money.
She was not a gold digger.
“You can do it, Mr. Lewis. You’re the best!”
Liberty cheered him on.
Duncan grinned. “Am I really the best?”
“Mr. Lewis.”
Duncan put his hand out to stop her from helping him up. He said, “I can do it. I have to do it myself. You can’t help me.”
He was determined to see the rehabilitation to the end by himself with no help from others.
Standing in a corner, Liberty watched him take a rest on the ground for a while and climb to his feet. His legs felt like jelly because he got up and fell back down before he could take another step.
“Why don’t you take a break, Mr. Lewis?”
Liberty felt for him.
Now, she could understand why even his mother, Corey, was not allowed around when Duncan was doing his physiotherapy session.
It was not because Duncan felt embarrassed. He simply did not want those who cared about him to feel sorry for him.
