After exiting the detention center, Nathan declined Lincoln's offer to send them home, instead he drove off with Penny and Kylie.
Nathan's car had just disappeared from view when Colin Dunne appeared.
Lincoln stood up straight and addressed Colin respectfully. "Colonel Dunne!"
"Send Henry Lancaster and the rest of his miserable men back to Alberesque. And remember, keep Mr. Cross' identity a secret!" instructed Colin.
Lincoln nodded. "Yes, sir. I'll make sure your orders are followed."
Nathan, Penny, and Kylie drove back home.
On the way, Penny couldn't help but ask, "Nathan, since when did you know Deputy Chief Naas? If it weren't for his help, we would've been in a lot of trouble."
Nathan gave a small smile. "Actually I hardly know Lincoln Naas at all.”
Penny's eyes shot wide in surprise. "Then why was he helping you so much?"
Locking Henry Lancaster and his men up and demoting Chase Li were technically justifiable decisions that fell under his purview.
But his 'an-eye-for-an-eye' style of justice such as locking the Elite Eight in with Henry and putting Hector in the same holding cell with gay men was clearly just to exact revenge for Nathan.
If Lincoln and Nathan weren't close, then there was no reason for him to do any of those things!
Nathan chuckled. "When they grabbed me, I asked for a phone call. They didn't realize I was calling to file a complaint with the Mayor himself."
"And that worked?" gasped Penny.
"Our Cross Corporations is considered a key business here. And now that we've obtained the rights to the liver cancer vaccine, there's a good chance we'll
become a corporation known across the globe.”
"The Channing city officials value our business greatly. So they naturally won't look the other way when the Zabinskis send Henry Lancaster and the rest here to sabotage us.”
Penny took Nathan's words at face value, and so she felt very grateful. "The city officials are really nice to us. We definitely have to work harder and give back to the community, and prove to everyone that their trust in us is well placed."
Penny steadfastly believed Nathan's explanation, but Kylie, who was sitting in the back seat, was continuously rolling her eyes.
She knew that Henry Lancaster and the rest posed no threat to Nathan at all. It was like they were little fruit flies trying to bite off more than they can chew, all their carefully concocted plans were absolutely futile.
The next day, Henry Lancaster and his men were sent back to Alberesque by the Channing authorities.
They were all suffering from broken limbs which would likely take many, many months to heal.
And even after they did heal up, they wouldn't be able to stay in the Investigation Unit and instead be given desk duty.
He sharply tugged on the carp and forcibly separated it from the hook, mangling the carp's mouth. Blood spilled everywhere.
Splash!
The carp was thrown back into the lake, and it quickly swam away.
But Alfred knew. A fish with a torn mouth wasn't going to survive.
A maid who was waiting by the side carried a basin of water and a towel over to Dip so he could wash his hands.
He dried his hands off before turning to Alfred, looking expressionless. "What did you want to say?”
"Sir, Henry Lancaster and Zander Zabinski have returned," reported Alfred dutifully.
Dip remained expressionless. "Did Zander killed Nathan Cross? The Zabinskis have exacted their revenge?”
Alfred looked uncomfortable. "Nathan Cross is still alive and well. It's Henry Lancaster and his men who were severely
injured. And Zander Zabinski is worse off. He's completely crippled."
Dip froze. "What?"
