Nathan told Carlos to arrange for men to bring the national treasure back to the country before retreating to his room with Penny to rest.
The next morning, just as Nathan woke up, Carlos rushed to him to seek help.
As Nathan lifted a cup of tea to sip in the living room, he asked, “Carlos, it's quite early. Did something urgent happen?”
Carlos was pale, and in the next second, he went down on his knees.
Both Nathan and Penny froze.
Even Colin and Ava were dumbfounded by the sudden turn of events.
Nathan was the first to come back to his senses. As he frowned, he asked, “Carlos, what are you doing? You're Eurasia's ambassador in Eagleland. Your identity is closely related to our country's reputation. How can you possibly get on your knees just like that? Stand up! You have to be more mindful of your reputation in the future.”
However, Carlos did not dare to rise to his feet. In a shaky voice, he uttered, “I haven't been able to complete the task you've assigned to me well. Something has gone wrong. I deserve death for my mistake! President Cross, I've come today to accept my punishment!”
Nathan and Penny shared a look at that. Both realized that something must have happened.
Moreover, Nathan could guess that it must have something to do with the imperial jade seal.
Nathan then calmly asked, “Speak. What happened?”
As Carlos was overwhelmed with shame, his voice remained shaky. “President Cross, haven't you asked me to assign people to transport the imperial jade seal back to the country? I assigned this task to a security company called Robin Security.”
Nathan asked, “Something went wrong?”
Even Penny was starting to scowl as she fumed, “Robin Security is despicable!”
“Carlos, you must have signed an agreement when you hired Robin Security to transport the national treasure. Just have them pay us the compensation as stated in the agreement. If not, order them to return the national treasure, or else we'll hold them legally accountable for the matter.”
As Carlos trembled, he said, “President Cross, Mrs. Cross, I really deserve death for this! I've been tricked by Robin Security’s chairman when we were discussing the insurance amount for the agreement.”
Nathan furrowed his brows. “Tricked?”
Carlos continued, “That's right. The chairman of Robin Security said that the national treasure's actual price isn't as high as five billion six hundred million. It's because Mr. Cross is fighting against Mr. Morse, and that's why the final price of the imperial jade seal was that high. He told me that the jade seals were generally priced around a hundred million, and it was already shocking to have it priced at three hundred million. Thus, he suggested I insure it for five hundred million. Moreover, he said he would clarify with the customs officers about the situation—that the item had been insured at its proper price. He told me, that way, we would be able to save on a lot of tax when we go through the customs. I was a fool at that moment, and I agreed to his suggestion. Therefore, the agreed insured price for our national treasure is only five hundred million. If Robin Security refuses to take responsibility for the matter—if they refuse to return the jade seal to us—even if we were to bring this to court, they would only need to compensate us with the amount of five hundred million.”
Upon hearing that, Nathan and the others were taken aback and furious.
