Leading his men, Nathan began to retreat.
At the same time, Malcolm ordered the Volk army to monitor the Eurasians at a distance.
As Nathan and Lucas sat in the command vehicle, both of them stared at each other in silence.
In the meantime, Nathan's body swayed rhythmically together with the vehicle's movements.
When he saw the wounds that covered Lucas' body, he asked plainly,
“Do you have anything to say over your dire circumstances?”
Ever since Nathan was the Commander-in-Chief of the North Army, Lucas was dissatisfied with him.
Back then, he liked to compete with Nathan at every opportunity as the commander-in-chief of the West Army.
In fact, both of them even fought against each other at the West Army's base.
Subsequently, Nathan was promoted by the President and took on the role of Chief Military Governor, which made him Lucas' superior.
Even though Lucas was close to Nathan and trusted him, he was always tempted to compete with the latter to prove that he was just as good.
Unfortunately, he had committed a grave mistake in his strategy and actions against Volk, resulting in devastating consequences.
Initially, he had planned to martyr himself at the Nine-Nation Summit.
Therefore, it never crossed his mind that Nathan would launch a raid on the summit with an elite team and pull him out from the jaws of death.
In fact, Nathan even defeated the Gods of War belonging to Xyperia, Jetroina, and Volk, terrorizing everyone at the Nine-Nation Summit.
At that moment, it dawned upon Lucas how big the gulf between him and Nathan was.
Nathan could easily accomplish something that was impossible for him.
“Hence, I have discussed with the President, the army leadership, and the Cabinet, the appropriate punishment for you. We have decided to demote you by three ranks from general to major-general. Do you have any objections?”
Although the demotion was a grave punishment, it was still considered acceptable given the circumstances.
Thus, Lucas replied willingly, “I accept my punishment.”
Nathan continued, “Eurasia cannot do without the West, and the latter cannot do without you. Therefore, you will still retain your post as the commander-in-chief of the West for a three-year term. If you distinguish yourself within that period, your rank as general and commander-in-chief of the West will be reinstated permanently. On the other hand, if you screw up again, that will be the final nail in the coffin for your military career. Have I made myself clear?”
Lucas couldn't believe his ears. When he heard that he was being demoted by three ranks, he expected to lose his post as the commander-in-chief of the West.
Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine that Nathan would not only retain him but also give him an opportunity to redeem himself.
With reddened eyes, he replied in a trembling voice, “Chief Cross, I will do my very best to repay the debt of gratitude I owe you.”
Nathan answered plainly, “I look forward to it.”
