Salute To The General (Nathan Cross) novel Chapter 2286

Just then, Vernon's secretary made his way into his office. Vernon glared at his secretary and ordered him to boil some water.

Soon, the tea was ready.

Vernon poured half a cup of tea for Nathan, Colin, and himself before smiling. “Please, General Cross, Captain Dunne.”

“After you!” Nathan smiled.

“Thank you, Mr. Vernon.” Colin picked his cup up.

The three of them took a small sip.

“This is good!” said Nathan.

“It's not bad, right? I'll get my secretary to prepare some for you if you like it so much.” Vernon smiled.

Nathan shook his head. “No, I shouldn't steal this from you. Vernon, I'll be happy to just drink this every once in a while. There's no way I could bring myself to take it after drinking the tea that you brew for me.”

Being an observant guy, Vernon could tell that Nathan really didn't want the tea leaves.

Hence, he decided not to dwell on the topic anymore. Instead, he asked casually, “General, are you really here today for a cup of tea? Is there really nothing else?”

Nathan smiled. “That's right. I'm merely here for a cup of tea. However, I did invite two others over to join us.

I think they should be almost here by now.”

Vernon was stunned. “You invited others? Who?”

His secretary rushed into his office before Nathan could reply.

Vernon hated it when his subordinates entered without his permission.

His face fell. “Sam, where are your manners? Didn't you see that I have guests? Didn't I tell you that I'm not meeting anyone? Why are you acting so panicky? How improper.”

Sam was sweating profusely as he whispered in a low voice, “Mr. Vernon, the vice governor, Merwyn, is here.”

What?Vice governor Merwyn is here?

Vernon jumped up from his seat in surprise. “Come on, let's go greet him.”

Vernon was even more panicky to see Merwyn as compared to Nathan.

Even though Nathan was still the general, Vernon thought he had retired and had no real power anymore.

Vernon didn’t dare to get mad at Nathan. However, he started cursing at Oliver inwardly.

Oliver, you're trying to make me look bad, aren't you? Why didn't you tell me that the General and the Vice-Governor will be coming?

Just as Vernon was being reprimanded by Merwyn and was at a loss of what to say next, Nathan spoke up.

He picked up the teapot and poured a full cup of hot tea, smiled, and said, “I was the one who asked Oliver to invite you over for tea. So please, don't reprimand Vernon anymore.

Tea?”

Merwyn stared at Nathan coldly.

As the newly appointed vice-governor of the South, he had a lot of power.

He didn’t really like Nathan as he used to be the last Cabinet secretary, Mr. Davier's apprentice.

Moreover, he wasn't aware that Nathan was the Chief Military Governor. Hence, he refused to take the retired God of War seriously.

He stared at the cup of hot tea Nathan poured him angrily. D*mn it. They say a full cup of wine means respect, but a full cup of tea means contempt. Nathan, are you trying to bum my tongue off with this full cup of hot tea?
