Vincent left the office, knowing full well that Stephen hadn't agreed to his plan right away because he wanted to be fully prepared.
Once those shares were handed over, getting them back would be a whole different game—one that required cunning and leverage.
And Stephen only had two real aces up his sleeve when it came to controlling Vincent: his mother, and Mira Lawson, who was still behind bars.
Sooner or later, Mira would walk free. Vincent had always cared deeply for his little sister.
“Dad, you can’t just give all the shares to Vincent. What about me? Where does that leave me?” Mayfield Lawson nearly exploded at the news. The idea of Stephen handing over the shares to Vincent made his blood boil.
“Calm down,” Stephen replied coolly, sitting back in his chair as he regarded his younger son. “If things proceeded as usual, with the contributions Vincent’s made to Lawson & Co., you’d only get a sliver of the company—unless he made some colossal mistake.”
Mayfield plopped down on the couch, sulking.
“We give him all the shares and send him to secure Tyrone’s investment. If he succeeds, it means he’s got the skill. But if he fails, he’ll have to give the shares back. And if Tyrone does agree to invest, we’ll quietly sabotage the project behind the scenes. When it falls apart and Tyrone’s money goes up in smoke, Vincent will have to take the blame. At that point, he’ll be pressured to resign and hand everything over to you.” There was a twisted warmth in Stephen’s voice as he coaxed Mayfield.
They say a man’s heart always favors the child of the woman he loves most, and there was no exception here.
Stephen’s affections had always been with Mayfield’s mother, and so Mayfield had always enjoyed a special kind of favoritism.
“But Dad, what if he refuses to give the shares back?” Mayfield’s anxiety was obvious. Who willingly coughs up what’s already in their grasp?
“Don’t worry. The entire senior management at Lawson & Co.—they’re all loyal to me. The moment Vincent stumbles, they’ll force him out. And if that’s not enough, I’ve still got the one thing he’s most afraid of: his mother. He’s terrified I’ll divorce her. If I even mention it, she’d be devastated—she couldn’t handle the shame. If Vincent doesn’t hand over the shares, I’ll threaten divorce. That’ll leave Mira out in the cold, with no one to look after her once she’s out of prison.”
Stephen sounded utterly confident, convinced he knew his eldest son inside and out.
Vincent had always been protective of his mother. He’d cave—Stephen was sure of it.
Mayfield was still sulking. In his mind, everything that belonged to the Lawson family should have been his by right.
