Following that thought, the man then reversed his car a little and rolled the window down before calling out, “Um… Miss? Are you headed to town in this weather…? If so, get in! I’ll give you a lift!”
It was at this moment when the drenched Xavia realized that she was shivering from the cold. With that in mind, she didn’t think too much as she muttered, “…Thanks. I appreciate it…”
Once she got in, the man was prompted to look at her through the rearview mirror… and since she was only wearing a thin, white, V-neck blouse and a tight pair of jeans, her voluptuous figure was perfectly outlined. To top it all off, she had the face of an angel…!
With all that in view, a sinister glint momentarily appeared in the man’s eyes. However, he quickly snapped out of it before saying, “So… Why are you all alone, Miss? And why didn’t you call for a cab instead?”
“…I came out here alone on my own accord,” replied Xavia who didn’t want to say anything more. Even so, the fact that she had said that she was all alone was all the man needed to hear to relax and continue driving…
Upon arriving at a toll station, the man stopped the car to refuel. Since he was already here, he was prompted to say, “I hope you don’t mind me having some noodles for a bit. I’ve been driving all day, you see… Don’t worry, I’ll be back in no time!”
“Take your time…” mumbled Xavia who couldn’t even feel the cold anymore as she stared out at the still-pouring rain… Currently, the only thing that was frozen solid was her heart.
Regardless of whether it was the Lockharts or Burtons, neither family made her feel like she belonged. Aside from Bianca, no one else was even remotely friendly to her in Darlsbury… She had been born in the same year and even month as Jenna… Why did she alone have to suffer such a miserable fate…?
Her train of thought was cut short when her phone suddenly began ringing. It was Zivon.
Feelingly slightly annoyed, she picked the call up before saying, “I’ve already gone back to Darlsbury, Young Master Burton. There’s no need to contact me.”
“…You what? Didn’t you go looking for Jenna?” replied Zivon who had thought that she was going to turn the tables with Jenna. It was already dinnertime, and he was calling out of slight worry since he hadn’t seen her since they last parted ways.
“…It’s just a driver who picked me up. Regardless, while I appreciate your concern, you don’t need to help me. Worry not, I’ll be booking a hotel room to stay the night, and I’ll leave for Darlsbury the second I can.”
Before Zivon could reply, Xavia had already hung up. This left him so angry that veins instantly popped up on his forehead…! This girl was hitchhiking alone with her body all drenched…?! Was she not worried that her condition would grab men’s attention…?!
Back on Xavia’s side, the driver was prompted to say in a slightly emotional tone, “Take it, miss… My daughter’s about the same age as you are, and she’s studying alone in some far-off city. By showing you compassion, I hope that someone else will do the same for my daughter on a rainy day…”
Xavia, for one, understood what it felt like to be a parent. Unfortunately for her, even when she was sad, strangers were apparently better than her family members at showing care…
“…Thank you, uncle…” muttered Xavia as she took the noodles without thinking too much about the implications of her actions… and shortly after the car took off—and she was done drinking up the noodle’s soup—, she began feeling rather uncomfortable and dizzy…!
