Serene looked at Wilson with watery eyes. Wilson could not tell her that they no longer have the child.
"The baby is fine, don't worry."
Wilson planned to keep it a secret until Serene recovered. She smiled when she heard Wilson's words. "I know that our baby would be fine."
Wilson hugged her. "I'm sorry that I did not protect both of you."
"Who could've predicted that this would happen? Furthermore, I've been unconscious for so many days; a lot must have happened since then, right?"
Wilson explained that he had argued with Stephen. Stephen was his Godfather, so Serene knew that he must have felt bad.
"I did not expect Stephen to be so evil, Wilson. I know that you must have felt bad, arguing with Stephen, but you still have the baby and me." She took his hand and placed it on her tummy.
Wilson gazed at her intensely as a feeling of loss rose in his heart. If Serene knew that the child was gone, she would be extremely heartbroken.
Wilson smiled forcefully as he hugged her again and said, "I have you, and that is enough. As long as you are safe with me, I am content."
Serene smiled. "If you are sad, you must let me know. I can share the burden with you."
"I'm not sad. You've woken up now, so I am more than happy."
Serene leaned onto him as she stretched. "How long have I been asleep? I feel so weak."
"You've been asleep for almost half a month. If you still did not wake up, I would have gone crazy."
Serene laughed. "But if you've gone mad, then there would be no one left to save me, and I'd still be asleep."
Wilson thought that when Serene woke up, she would blame and loathe him or even wanted to break up with him. However, he did not expect her to comfort him instead. He felt even guiltier.
"Serene."
"Yes?"
Wilson hugged her again. He nuzzled into her neck and said, "Let me tie up some loose ends here, and then we'll go back to North City. I will never leave you, and I won't do any dangerous gig again. You like kids, so we'll have many kids. If you want pickled fish, I'll make them for you every day. How does that sound?"
Serene was taken aback. She did not think that Wilson would give up his job for her. She looked at Wilson hesitantly and asked, "But if you give up something that you're passionate about, would you be unhappy? I do not want you to be unhappy because of me."
What job? Who would like such a dangerous job? He was not a free man, but Stephen's powers have been dissolved. He was made the acting leader for the Light Organization. He did not care who would take over that position. He only wanted to live a normal and happy life with the woman he loved.
Wilson looked at her lovingly as he touched her face. "Even if I don't do this, I can still practice medicine. I'd be an *sshole to make you wait for me and worry for me. My favorite job is to keep you happy."
Serene began to cry. "Why do you treat me so well? You'll spoil me to death." She wiped her tears.
Wilson kissed her. "Spoiling you is the most important thing in my life."
Serene was about to say something flirtatious when her stomach grumbled. She blushed in embarrassment. "I've not eaten in days. I'm so hungry I can eat an entire cow."
Wilson ordered some food for her, and they were all Serene's favorite dishes. He did not allow her to eat oily food, so they only had porridge with meat and vegetables.
When Serene was full, she laid on her bed and looked at her surroundings. "Wilson, where are we?"
Serene nodded. "I dreamt that I saw you next to me by the bed. I tried calling your name, but you couldn't hear me. I tried to hug you, but my body was translucent, so I couldn't even touch you. I thought it was all real. I cried for a long time."
Wilson's heart almost broke. He touched her face and said, "I'll settle things quickly here in Z country, and then we can go somewhere to have a good time."
He would help her while she recovered, and they could try for another baby.
He would only tell her about the baby when they had a second one. Perhaps she would not be as sad then.
Serene frowned. "Why did the people here call you 'leader'?"
"It's nothing. I'm just a small, low-rank official. I'll resign when you've recovered, and we can return to North City."
Serene had always trusted Wilson. She did not doubt him, not even for one second. She hugged him as she nodded. "I'm a little tired. I'll sleep for a while. Don't go anywhere."
"I won't. I'll watch you sleep."
Wilson looked at Serene's serene and peaceful face, but he was filled with guilt and remorse. He could not help but touch her delicate face. Serene used to be quite thin, but not as languished as that. She used to have some baby fat, but she looked pale and not as energetic as before.
Serene could stay active for a long time after a short rest, but that day, after her meal, she had started to feel sleepy. Her body had clearly taken a hit.
Nevertheless, she was awake; nothing else mattered. He was confident that she would get better in no time at all.
The days ahead were still long, but they would be fine.
