It was evening when Serene thought about how Joan took care of her for the last couple of days. Since she would leave the next day, she decided to go to the infirmary to bid Joan farewell.
Joan smiled as soon as she saw Serene. "What brings you here? I thought Aret likes to keep you to himself round-the-clock?"
Serene blushed. "Come on, Joan. Anyway, I'm going back to North City tomorrow, so I’m here to say goodbye."
"So soon? Is Aret willing to let you go so soon?"
Serene pursed her lips before she sighed and said, "I wanted to stay here with him, but he insists on sending me home."
Joan nodded. "Well, he's doing the right thing. After all, it's not safe here, and the living conditions are deplorable as well. You still have a job in North City, right?"
Serene completely forgot about her job. "I was abducted so suddenly, so I didn't even get the chance to take leave from the hospital's management. I'm so screwed. I hope I won't get sacked."
Serene checked her social media account immediately, but there was no connection to the outside world at all.
"I think you can only explain yourself to the hospital management after you're back to North City. We don't have any signal here at all; it can only be used internally."
Serene pulled a face; they were pretty fenced off from the world.
Joan checked the medicines. "By the way, I think Aret finished his medications. Can you pass this bottle to him later?"
Serene took the bottle of medicine and frowned. "Joan, what is this?"
Serene was a doctor, but she had never seen such medicine. The bottle was labeled with only the medicine name but without any information about the ingredients or manufacturer. It looked more like a homemade medicine.
Joan was stunned. She looked at Serene with a weird gaze. "You don't know about Aret's illness?"
As she held the bottle in her hand, Serene was slightly taken aback by that question. "Illness? What's wrong with him?"
It seemed like Serene knew nothing about it. Joan pondered for a few moments before she sighed and said, "Well, he's fine now, so I guess it's not a problem for you to find out about it."
Joan sat down. "He had some serious issues with his stomach, and it has been recurring lately. That was why Thompson and Ruby rushed to bring him here for treatment."
"Was it...stomach cancer?"
Serene's heart was in her mouth.
Joan replied with a faint hum. When she saw Serene's nervous and concerned face, Joan comforted her. "You don't have to worry; he's fine now. Thompson is a highly skilled doctor in this area, so he won't let Aret die. Aret has been recovering well after the surgery. These pills are Thompson's latest developments. He'll be as healthy as the next person after three courses. After all, his physical strength is way better than an ordinary person. So he'll be perfectly fine."
"But, if he's as strong as you said, how could he get such a disease?"
Joan shrugged. "Well, some disease has nothing to do with a person's physical strength. Even though medical research says that diseases are related to genes, but who knows, some things are just meant to happen. However, White Wolf is a tenacious guy."
Serene's heart ached. Was that why he wanted to break up with her when he fainted and was sent to the hospital? Was it because of his disease?
Why did he not tell her?
When she noticed the redness in Serene's eyes, Joan reached out to pat her shoulder as she said, "Don't feel too sad about it. Everything is well now. After all, people like us live on the ragged edge. We never know when our enemies will break through our defenses to blow us up, so don't think about it too much."
They must have experienced numerous life-or-death situations to talk about death so calmly.
Serene knew that she was not like Wilson and Joan. She could not take death lightly, nor had she experienced any life-or-death situations.
Serene sobbed as she hummed in reply.
Wilson could feel her tears on his back; it felt as if it had burned his skin.
"Everybody else knew about it, so why was I kept in the dark? I'm your girlfriend. Wilson Jarret, how could you do this to me? What if you're suddenly, and I knew nothing about it. How would I see you for the last time?"
Wilson's lips twitched, and he said, "Then let's not see each other for the last time. There's nothing good about seeing each other for the last time."
"What if I can't stop thinking about you, and yet I can't ever find you again? I'd be unhappy for the rest of my life."
"I'm sorry. I didn't think of it like that."
Serene immediately burst into tears. She felt like she was a bad girlfriend, but he had apologized to her instead.
Serene hugged him tighter. "I won't ever leave you again. You don't have to be the only to shower me with love; I will care for you at the same time too."
Wilson laughed and reached out to pull her into his embrace. He sighed. "My dear Serene, you've grown up, haven't you? You know how to care for others now."
Serene traced his surgical scars and gunshot wounds with her fingers. Her heart tightened in pain, and she bit her lips. "I know that you're used to facing death, but to me, nothing is more important than staying alive. Wilson Jarret, I want you to stay alive. You can't ever die."
Wilson gazed into her teary eyes as he made her a solemn promise. Word by word, he said, "It's true that I've never feared death, but from now on, I will make every effort to bring myself back to you—alive."
He had started to fear death because of her. He would usually think of all kinds of precarious solutions when he was in dangerous situations. All that had changed; he would pray for a safe return instead so that he could get a glimpse of her, even if it were only from far away.
Wilson realized that he needed to stay alive, and it was all because of her.
