Joan returned to the infirmary with a tray of food and a box of chocolates.
Serene's mood had improved significantly when she smelled the delicious scent of food.
Joan propped up the little side table next to her bed and handed her the food. "Eat up. You'll feel less dizzy after you eat. If you're hypoglycemic, always carry some candy with you. Even though it's not a serious condition, it can be extremely dangerous if your body is weak."
Serene nodded and said, "Thank you."
Then, Joan handed her the box of chocolates and said, "Your boyfriend gave you this box of chocolates. He told me to watch you finish it."
Serene blushed as she said, "I... We've already broken up. He's not my boyfriend…"
Serene said that in a very soft tone.
That was huge news for Joan. "So, you dated Wilson?"
Serene nodded shyly.
Joan gave her a thumbs-up and said, "Wow, way to go, Sister! You should know, not even a female mosquito could go near that dude. The fact that you dated him blew me away!"
Serene was stunned to hear that, so she asked, "But you and Ruby are women?"
"Oh, us? We're more like comrades, so we're not exactly 'women' to him. You, on the other hand, are one."
Joan stared at her with a teasing look before she said, "Eat up. You need to taste what chocolates from your boyfriend would taste like."
Serene blushed again.
She picked up a piece of the chocolate, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth. It was sweet, and the texture felt great. It tasted delicious.
"Delicious?"
Serene smiled and replied, "It does."
"Eat more then."
As Joan stared at that little lady, she started to feel curious again, so she asked, "How did you meet Wilson anyway?"
Serene's intuition told her that the lady was nice and friendly. She was not like the difficult Ruby. It was apparent that Joan was a social person. Aside from Wilson, Serene knew no one there. So, she felt close to Joan.
Serene was more than pleased to share the chocolates with her new friend. "When I graduated from university, I did my internship in a hospital. He was my supervisor."
"What a coincidence!"
Joan rubbed her chin as she found the entire situation odd.
Wilson might have already planned to meet the woman for quite some time!
Serene also wanted to know something from Joan, so she asked, "Since you're his comrade… Can you tell me if your line of work is really that dangerous?"
Joan winked at her. "Worried about him?"
Serene felt sad when Joan brought that up. "Perhaps it was his work that he always rejected me. I don't know what to do."
"You don't mind his work? He can make you a widow at any given moment."
Serene bit her lips. "Of course I mind, but what can I do? If we can control our feelings, then I shall tell myself not to fall in love with such a dangerous man."
Joan patted her head. "As a woman, I understand you meant."
The silhouette of a tall and slender man could be seen outside of the infirmary. The man's brows were furrowed.
He finally left after a long while.
…
Serene was finally done with her glucose drip. After she ate some food, she went to look for Wilson as she carried half a box of chocolates in her hands.
However, due to the size of the base, she did not know where to find him.
"Well, why didn't you finish it then?"
Serene giggled and said, "I want to keep some for remembrance."
Wilson chuckled.
Serene had only recovered from her hypoglycemia, so she was still very weak. She cautiously asked, "Master, may I sit on your bed?"
The room was small, and there was no extra space available. The only place that she could sit was on the bed.
Wilson replied, "Sure." Then, Serene gleefully sat on his bed.
"I'll have someone send you back to North City tomorrow."
The moment Serene heard that, she stood up and said, "I don't want to go back. I haven't reconciled things with you yet."
She should mend their relationship before she returned home, right?
Wilson raised his brows. "Who told you that I wanted to reconcile with you?"
Serene stuttered, "Don't you...want me anymore? But after I confessed to you in the helicopter...you didn't reject me…"
Her voice sounded weak and soft.
"But I'm rejecting you now. Why? Is that not okay?"
"But you like me, and I told you that I'd learn to accept your job."
Wilson lowered his gaze and looked straight at her eyes. "Just because I like you doesn't mean that we have to be together. Do you understand?"
"No, I don't. All I know is when two people like each other, they have to be together."
After she said that, Serene boldly opened her arms to give him a bear hug.
