Serene traveled through the night to get back to Clear River Town. She was so anxious she could feel her heartbeats from her throat.

Her mother's heart had not been in the best shape, and she had hypertension. Serene was unsure if her mother's frustrations had triggered her hypertension and heart attack.

She would feel incredibly guilty if her mother was admitted to the hospital because of her relationship with Wilson.

After a two-hour bus ride at night, she finally arrived at Clear River Town.

Serene called her father when she arrived in her town. "Dad, are you in at the hospital with mom, or are you at home?"

Serene's mother, who was lying in bed, eyeballed her father. After her father caught her meaning, he told his daughter, "Serene, you can come home. We're both at home. Your mother had been released from the hospital."

"What? Are you sure it's okay to discharge her? Shouldn't she be in the hospital for observations for another couple of days?"

"The doctor said your mother's ailment was caused by stress, and she needs rest. There's no reason for her to stay in the hospital. Where are you now? Do you want me to pick you up?"

"No, there's no need. I'll reach home soon."

It seemed she had hurt her mother.

Serene was depressed, and she blamed herself. Even though she did not mean for any of that to happen, it was still her fault, and her mother got sick because of that.

When Serene arrived home, she changed into her slippers and rushed into the bedroom to check on her mother.

"Mom, how do you feel?"

Serene's mother grabbed her head and cried out in agony. "Oh, good Lord, my head hurts. Oh, Serene, I don't want anything else but for you to listen to us both. If anything were to happen to me, I wouldn't be able to help you with anything else anymore. However, you're the one I worry about the most."

Serene sniffled when she heard that. She said, "Mom! Why are you spouting nonsense? You will live a long and healthy life!"

"The doctor said I could not handle any more triggers for my ailment. If I do, the outcome will be unimaginable…"

Serene nodded thoughtfully as she bit her lips. "Mom, I won't go against your wishes again in the future."

"Then promise me. Promise me that you'd stop dating Wilson?" Serene's mother's eyes lit up.

Serene was stunned. After a brief moment of hesitation, she mustered some courage and said, "Mom, let's not talk about this now. We'll talk after you've recovered."

She had thought it through. She could not agitate her mother, but she could not give up on Wilson so easily, either.

Serene knew that Wilson was serious about her. Would she not wrong him if she broke up with her because of her parents?

"Oh, good Lord… my head is starting to hurt again."

Serene's mother flailed her arms around as she pushed Serene away. Her expressions looked agonizingly painful.

Serene felt helpless, so she looked at her father with a frantic look and said, "Dad, what should we do? Should we send mom to the hospital now?"

Serene's father was not even the slightest worried about her wife; she could sure act. Even though her recent blood pressure reading had been slightly higher than usual, it should not warrant a splitting headache. When he saw the panic in his daughter's eyes, he said, "Go and take a shower, Serene. I'll take care of your mother. It is nothing serious, so don't worry about her. You must be exhausted at this hour, and you have spent so much time on the road."

Serene's mother glared at her father. Why did he not play along with her?

If he had played along, that little brat would have already caved in by then!

After Serene exited the room reluctantly, Serene's mother started to complain.

Serene bit her lips and felt slightly depressed.

Was he angry at her? It was not like she had intentionally refused his call.

"Mom… Your body isn't doing too well, so why would you want to go to North City to take care of me?"

Serene should be the one to take care of her mother instead.

"My body is doing fine now. The doctor said that as long as I'm not angry, I can live until I'm a hundred years old."

Serene's mother ignored Serene and spoke to her husband instead. "Honey, why are you still standing here? Send us to the station. You'll have to take care of yourself for the time being."
