After some time hiding under the blanket, Verian could hear faint knocks on the door.
She threw off her blanket and pricked up her ears for a few seconds. When she saw car lights coming in from the window, she dashed outside without even putting on her shoes.
Yandel must have sent someone here to pick her up…
This place was too terrifying…
Impatiently, she opened the door. Without even looking at the person in the car, she started speaking in a trembling voice, “Finally, you guys came. I…”
Verian lifted her head and was immediately stupefied.
That man in front of her… How could he look so much like Heaton…
Her heart started racing.
She opened her mouth, then closed it. She was frozen at the same spot for quite some time. When she came back to her senses, the first thing she did was run back to the room and lock the door!
However, Heaton reacted fast and blocked the door with his long leg. “If you want to disable your husband, just push harder. I’ll be fine with it. I’m just afraid that you won’t be able to bear the loneliness of living as a widow for the rest of your life.”
Verian was speechless.
Verian dared not push harder but at the same time, she did not want him to come in.
“You, what are you doing here?”
“Of course I’m here to look for Mrs. Fudd.”
She hid behind the door, leaning against it. Heaton sounded a bit agitated seeing her.
Verian’s voice trembled, not because she was shocked but due to the fact that her nose stung uncontrollably. She sobbed, “We’re already divorced so I’m not Mrs. Fudd anymore. You’re looking for the wrong person.”
“I know clearly whether we’re already divorced or not. Have you seen our divorce decree?”
“You’re lying.”
Feeling aggrieved, her tears finally rolled down her cheeks.
Heaton’s boiling anger dissipated as soon as she started tearing up. He could only sigh with resignation. “I wasn’t the one who wanted a divorce.”
Verian choked as she said, “Who was it then? A ghost?”
How could she not realize that Heaton was a fast talker?
Heaton suddenly felt like teasing her. “So you were scared by a ghost just now?”
Verian was speechless.
She violently wiped her tears away. “You’re the one who was scared by a ghost! No… Heaton Fudd, I don’t want to see you! Go away!”
Surprisingly, the man had managed to divert her attention.
Heaton asked tentatively, “Won’t you be afraid of ghosts if I leave?”
Verian raged, “I-I’m not afraid of ghosts! Ghosts don’t even exist in this world!”
Although she said that, her moist eyes were shut tight. She was afraid she would see something dirty.
Heaton started speaking softly, “I heard that somewhere near Mount Pia...are many tombs. 10 years ago, this place used to be a mass graveyard. It was only developed into a scenic spot two years ago. Since it’s a mass graveyard, I guess there must be many souls and ghosts wandering around this area. Rumors say that these wandering ghosts are extremely evil. Do you know what they like the most?”
Verian kept silent.
She covered her ears and shook her head. Terrified, she said, “I don’t want to know! Stop talking about it!”
“Rumors say that those wandering ghosts love to capture fair maidens like you to make into their wives.”
Verian was petrified. Since young, she was always afraid of listening to ghost stories and yet, Heaton wanted to tell her a ghost story now.
Kush who was standing not far away nearly burst out laughing.
He never knew that his boss had quite the skills in chasing after his wife. He even told her a ghost story. He learned something new that day. One should never trust a man’s words.
Finally, Heaton stopped teasing her. He stroked her trembling back with his large hands and comforted her gently. “Alright, stop crying. I’ll stop scaring you.”
“What was that just now…” Verian was terrified but could not help ask curiously.
Heaton laughed. He lowered his eyes and looked at her, “You’ll know when you open your eyes?”
“But I’m scared. It’s not a ghost, right? Forget it, I don’t want to see it.” Verian struggled and shook her head.
“Even if it’s a ghost, I’m here, right? I won’t allow the ghost to take you away.”
Verian felt unconsciously relieved after hearing Heaton’s words. After hesitating for a few moments, she gradually moved her face away from Heaton’s neck. However, she immediately retreated after she saw the hideous-looking creature on his phone!
“Take it away! Quick!”
She flapped her arms around and hit Heaton’s phone, sending it flying off the ground.
Heaton hugged her and pondered for two seconds. He pressed his thin lips against her ear and whispered, “You broke my phone. How are you planning to compensate me?”
“Who asked you to scare me… It's all your fault! All your fault!”
Heaton nodded his head helplessly. Alright, he was the one to blame.
Heaton kicked the phone on the floor aside. Then, he carried Verian and walked forward. “Where’s the bedroom?”
Verian’s eyes remained shut. She stretched out her finger and pointed. “There.”
Heaton looked at her being all timid with his dark eyes. He smiled as his mood lightened up.
Verian climbed into bed immediately after they entered the bedroom. She covered herself with the thick quilt.
Heaton turned on the desk lamp in the bedroom. The light was soft. He sat at the edge of the bed and looked at her.
Wearing a vigilant look, Verian stared at him. She moved backward slightly to keep a safe distance between them.
Heaton leaned toward her and stared at her with his dark and burning gaze. “You don't want me anymore after you’re done using me?”
