The road back to Clear River Town was neither short nor long.
When Serene and Wilson were out of the hospital, there was a minor road congestion at the city center.
It was already around four in the afternoon when they were finally on the flyover.
Serene was seated on the passenger seat and as she felt bored, her hands played with her phone as she scrolled through Weibo and social media.
Wilson was rather reserved but Serene had always been a chatterbox. While holding her phone, she casually started a conversation with Wilson. “Master, where does your relative from Clear River Town live at? Who knows, I might know them.”
Clear River Town was not big and as a local, Serene knew almost everyone from the town. Even if she did not or was unsure of their name, they would still be considered a familiar face if they bumped into each other on the street.
Unexpectedly, Wilson answered her impassively, “What does it have to do with you?”
Serene was silenced.
Sigh, he was so mean. She could not even ask him about this.
Serene’s phone rang and it was a call from her mother.
She picked up the phone and over the phone, her mother asked, “Renie, where are you?”
“I’m on the flyover now and will be home in about half an hour.”
“Then I can start cooking now.”
Serene responded, “Yes, go ahead. Oh right, mom, I want to eat braised prawns.”
Serene’s mother chuckled. “I know you like to eat prawns so I went to the market early in the morning to get sand shrimps for you. Chainey is by your side, right? It’s his first time coming over for a meal. I don’t know what he likes so ask him for me.”
“Huh…? Forget-forget about it.”
Serene’s mother replied, “This child... What do you mean by forgetting about it? You just have to ask him a question, it’s not like I’m asking you to do the cooking.”
Serene bit her lips and hesitated for a moment. “About that, mom, Chainer didn’t follow me home.”
“Huh? Didn’t we agree on it? You were supposed to bring Chainey home for a meal. Why is there a sudden change of plans?”
“He…”
With the phone against her ear, Serene was trying to come up with a lie. Suddenly, her phone was snatched away by the man driving.
Serene turned her head toward him. One of his hands was on the steering wheel while the other was holding the phone. He politely said, “Auntie, nice to meet you. I’m not a picky eater. I’ll eat anything you make.”
Serene was speechless.
After Wilson said those words, she could hear Serene’s mom happily repeat “Good!” multiple times over the phone.
Serene’s mother had never met Chainer. She had only seen his photos and because of that, she could not recognize the voice over the phone.
After the call ended, Serene frowned. “My mom asked what Chainer likes to eat, not you.”
Wilson raised his brows. “I gave you a ride and it isn’t for free.”
Serene blew a fuse and glared at him from the passenger seat. This man…would haggle with her for even the smallest of things, huh!
She was just hitching a ride, so how dare he demand interest from her! He was really stingy to the extreme!
Judging from how Wilson enjoyed the finer things in his life, how could he be so stingy and fussy!
Hmm…? That was not right. What he meant was that he wanted to go to her house for dinner, right?
Serene instantly became serious and looked at him with a stern expression. “Master, didn’t you want to go to Clear River Town to visit your relative? Why do you want to go to my house?”
Did his relative not want to invite him over for dinner?
“I’ll visit them tomorrow.”
Serene sneered. ‘If he’s going to his relative’s house tomorrow, why does he want to go Clear River Town tonight!’
However, she dared not voice her discontent. Throughout the whole journey, she was thinking of how to make him drop the idea of going over to her house for dinner.
…
When they arrived at Clear River Town, Serene looked at the scenery along the way to her house and her mood lifted.
As they were passing by the streets, Serene spotted a restaurant that sold her favorite braised dishes. She then turned around and made a request to Wilson. “Stop for a while, stop. I want to buy some dishes.”
After saying that, she wished that she could have bit her tongue off. Why did she tell him? Did she really want him to go to her house and get a free meal!
The two of them went into one passageway after the other.
It was an old-fashioned neighborhood. Hence, there was no elevator and only six floors. Serene’s house was on the fourth floor. It was neither too high nor low, so not much effort was needed to climb up the stairs. As they stood at the house’s entrance, Serene hesitated for a while as she did not dare to ring the doorbell.
Wilson frowned. “Why? Are you waiting for me to knock on the door for you?”
Serene quickly declined right after he said that. “No, no, let me do it.”
When Serene’s mother opened the door, the smile on her face froze.
She stared at the handsome, lofty, and principled man in front of her. She stared at him for quite some time and could not spot the similarity between this man and Chainer that she had seen in photos.
However, Serene’s mother did not think further as she was entranced by “Chainer”’s stunning looks.
Serene’s mother took Wilson’s hand and smiled, “Chainey, quick, come in. You and Renie just need to sit down for a bit before dinner is ready to be served!”
Serene interrupted her, “Mom… He…”
However, Serene’s mother ignored her and pulled Wilson into the house.
Wilson asked, “Aunt, do you have house slippers? I’ll change into slippers.”
Serene’s mother answered enthusiastically, “You don’t have to change shoes. It’d be troublesome for you to change into other shoes. I’m cleaning the house tomorrow, after all. Quickly come in and have a seat.”
Serene felt all this was a little taxing. She then muttered, “Does my mom have blurred vision due to old age? How can she not realize he isn’t Chainer…”
Serene carried bags of braised dishes in her hand and went into the house right away. Just as she closed the door, her mother frowned and grumbled at her, feeling displeased. “Serene Ludd, why did you enter the house with your shoes! Don’t you have slippers? Change into slippers now! You’re so sloppy!”
“...”
Serene was startled. Who was the master of this house? Now, she was even starting to doubt if she was her mother’s biological daughter!
“Why is he allowed to enter the house without changing shoes while I have to change into slippers instead? Whose mom are you…”
“Why are you standing there alone, mumbling to yourself! Change your shoes quickly and after that, wash your hands and pour a cup of tea for Chainey! Your dad is coming home soon. We’ll eat once he’s home!”
