After learning about Heaton's condition, John blamed himself.
He even began to feel sorry for Verian.
"I heard from Heaton that you've been helping him with his treatment during this period."
Verian nodded and said, "Dad, this is what I should do. I'm Heaton's wife."
The old man held the head of his walking stick. "Thank you for always staying by Heaton’s side. Despite his illness, you never... I've just known the real reason why he didn't want to get married. I didn’t know him well enough, and I kept urging him to get married. I even blamed him for not getting along well with anyone. Now, we have you... With you by his side, he should get better at some point."
After losing his eldest son Briskly when he was over 70 years old, the old man was anxious to see his only surviving son get married and have children. Verian could especially relate to his feelings.
"Dad, you don't have to blame yourself too much. I believe that Heaton will get well."
"Hm, he’ll recover. You stay with him, and he’ll get better."
When the old man talked about it, his voice became a little hoarse. Verian's eyes also turned teary.
When Verian left the old man's study, Heaton was sitting in the living room, playing games with Little Jelly Bean.
Seeing her red-rimmed eyes, Heaton walked over and touched her smooth face with his fingers. He asked, "What did dad tell you?"
Verian smiled. "He didn't say much. Dad asked me to stay with you. He blamed himself for not knowing anything about your condition all these years. Heaton, let's stay here for dinner tonight. We'll return to Shallow Bay after dinner."
"Sure."
...
After dinner, Heaton and Verian returned to the villa in Shallow Bay.
On the way, Heaton said while driving, "I've been away for so long. Now that I'm back, I suddenly realised that my dad looks a lot older."
Verian turned to look at him and comforted him. "Yes, since your accident, dad has been supporting the whole family alone. He has lost a son and almost lost you. Although he didn't shed tears in front of me, I know that when you had the accident, he was sadder than anyone else."
Heaton asked with a smile, "Don't you blame dad for being indifferent to you before?"
Verian shook her head. "Although dad used to be indifferent to me, he didn't have any bad intentions toward me, nor did he do anything to separate us. Why should I blame him? Dad was angry because we had a fake marriage before. What we've done was wrong anyway."
"You seem to get along well with the old man."
Verian smiled mischievously. "To be honest, I'm still afraid of dad. He's too serious. Heaton, when you're old, will you be the same? A serious little old man?"
Heaton said jokingly, "In front of Jelly Bean's husband, I'll certainly be a serious father-in-law."
"If you scare your son-in-law away, wouldn't Jelly Bean be sad?"
"The son-in-law who can be scared away by me is not worthy of her. I just want to keep Jelly Bean by my side. I'll support her for her whole life."
Feeling funny, Verian judged him. "You're a slave to your daughter!"
Verian touched her belly. She could not help but think about whether this was a male or a female in her belly. "You think the baby in my belly is a boy or girl?"
"I like girls."
"If this is a boy, then we'll have a son and a daughter."
Heaton's dark eyes took a deep glance at her. His thin lips curved, and he said nothing.
When Verian went to take a bath after arriving at the villa in Shallow Bay, Heaton stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at the night view outside. He made a call to Kush.
"Investigate the girl who goes by Sam by Yanni's side."
"Boss, do you suspect that the current Sam is a fake?"
"I think she could be the one behind my car accident."
Kush gasped and said, "After your accident, the chairman sent me to investigate this incident. The police station retrieved the car involved in your accident and found out that the brake oil pipe was maliciously cut. Boss, do you want me to contact the police station and interrogate Sam immediately?"
The fiery kiss warmed their hearts.
Heaton rested on her forehead softly and said in a hoarse voice, "If it's possible, I would rather he never shows up."
"We’ll cure it."
After going to bed and sleeping, Heaton turned off the lamp nearby. However, Verian refused to close her eyes and kept staring at his face.
Heaton stretched out his hand and hugged her in his arms tighter. He asked in a dull voice, "What's the matter? Won’t you get tired if you keep staring at me?"
"I'm afraid that once I close my eyes, you'll disappear again."
Heaton kissed her temples. "Go to sleep. Be good. A pregnant woman shouldn't stay up all night. I won't go missing."
"Heaton, on the seventh day of your accident, I lit a candle in this house, burned down the curtains, and almost caused a fire. Sometimes, I think I'm really useless. If you leave, I won’t be able to do anything. I can only behave in the dumbest way and wait for you to come back."
She sounded calm as if it was nothing, but Heaton's heart hammered after hearing her words.
Heaton asked in a low voice, "Why did you light a candle?"
"In the past, I heard this from old people. They said that after a person dies, the soul of the person who has passed away will come back to see his relatives if a room of candles is lit on the seventh day of his death."
Heaton's eyes were sore. He hugged her and sighed, "Silly."
In his heart, there was a warm feeling that passed through.
"I didn't believe in these superstitions before, but I thought maybe you'll really come back."
"Aren't you afraid that if I'm really dead and my soul returns? Isn't that very scary?"
Verian sniffed. "No matter what you become, I don't think you're scary. What makes me feel scared is that you'll never come back."
