Lain had no intention of leaving. Since she was so blatantly shameless, Verian was unable to get her to leave.
After taking a walk around the mall, Verian did not know what to eat so she asked Serene, “What do you want to eat?”
Serene was known to be an avid eater and was pretty easy to please. She said, “I’m fine with anything. Aren’t you pregnant? Don’t you crave for spicy and sour food? Why don’t we eat some hotpot?”
Verian thought hotpot was a great suggestion.
However, Lain was quite the attention seeker. She said, “Heaton isn’t a fan of hotpot because the spices are too heavy and will stick to the entire body after the meal. He might not be able to accept it.”
Ever since earlier, Lain was desperately trying to force her existence at them. Every statement she said was related to what Heaton liked. Although Verian kept her smile up, her raging fury burned brightly inside her.
“But, I suddenly felt like eating hotpot today. If you don’t like hotpot, Dr. Heidy, we can share a meal together next time. I have not met Serene in years and feel like treating her to a meal today.”
Lain was self-absorbed as she thought she knew Heaton the best. However, Verian adamantly wanted Heaton to eat hotpot with her.
Serene grabbed onto Verian’s arm. She added, “I too wish to eat hotpot.”
She accompanied Hades Jarret to an extremely expensive French meal last night and could not understand what was so delicious about it.
They headed toward a Sichuan and Chongqing hotpot restaurant. Since it was currently lunch hour, it was crowded. Verian made an excuse to use the washroom. When she arrived at the restroom, Verian sent Heaton a WeChat text.
"Free to head out for lunch?"
When he received the text, Heaton had just finished his meeting. He raised his brows slightly as he read the text on his screen.
Was she not out shopping with Serene?
"What’s up?"
Something must have happened for Verian to invite him out for lunch so suddenly.
Verian replied honestly. "Ran into Lain at the mall."
Heaton’s dark eyes deepened as he hammered out a series of words to her. "Send me the location, I’ll be there immediately."
Verian was speechless.
She replied with a string of ellipses.
Heaton could imagine her annoyed look as he stared at the screen. He replied with a "?".
He had the audacity to reply with a question mark? When she invited him out for lunch earlier and the moment she brought up Lain, he wanted to come over without hesitation?
"Are you here to accompany me for a meal, or are you here to meet Lain?"
"I’m just worried that Lain might bully you."
When she received this text, Verian clutched onto her phone as she somehow felt delighted and glad.
…
They took a four-person seat at the hotpot restaurant.
When Lain had just gotten seated, Serene’s quick-thinking mind made her immediately sit next to her.
Lain frowned as she gave Serene a glare. There were glimmers of menace which flashed at the bottom of her eyes. However, as untalented at everything as Serene was, she was quite unmatched in playing dumb. She could not be bothered by how bitter Lain looked as she chuckled at Lain.
Verian was secretly grateful to Serene. If Serene had sat next to her earlier, Heaton would have been seated beside Lain.
Heaton had not arrived yet, so Verian picked out the soup base first. She thought about how bland Heaton’s usual diet was so she picked out four different soup bases. There was the red soup, the bland soup, the mushroom, and the tomato soup.
When Verian was sanitizing the cutleries with hot water, Serene noticed the diamond ring around Verian’s finger. She praised, “Verian, the ring around your finger looks really pretty. Was this given by Heaton as your wedding ring?”
Verian bluntly admitted, “Yes, it is.”
She could see from her peripheral vision that Lain’s expression looked slightly bitter.
With a smile, Serene explained, “Don’t you worry, pregnant women can eat a suitable amount of sour and spicy food!”
Heaton still seemed to have concerns. Verian swiftly said, “Serene is a doctor, if she says it’s okay to eat then it’s okay to eat.”
Heaton only thought of Serene as a medical student and not a doctor yet, so he had very little faith in her.
Hence, he sent a text to Wilson.
However, Verian did not notice him do that.
When they were ordering food, Verian asked Heaton, “What do you want to eat?”
Heaton stared at her soft, white, and tiny face as he said, “Tofu.”
“Okay, I’ll order some tofu.”
The moment she finished her statement, she could feel the burning gaze of the man from above her head. When Verian looked up, she could see a teasing stare from the corner of his eyes.
Her face blushed slightly. Ordering anything was fine but when he ordered tofu, he was actually hinting, “I want to eat your tofu.”
Verian played dumb as she continued looking at the menu.
Serene ordered plenty of sliced beef rolls and sliced mutton. Verian then ordered some vegetables for Heaton.
The center of the table was steaming. Lain looked toward it and playfully said, “Before you were here, we were discussing the ring around Verian’s finger. I heard you wanted to buy Verian a three-carat diamond ring. However, I feel like with your taste, you might not have bought a three-carat diamond ring.”
Verian’s hand trembled as she was picking up some vegetables. She did not expect that Lain would expose her lie in front of Heaton.
As she thought about changing the topic to prevent any embarrassment that Heaton might cause from being oblivious to the whole ordeal, all she could hear was the man next to her gradually saying, “I thought about buying a three-carat but she didn’t like it.”
The edges of Verian’s ears felt slightly warm and it was unsure whether it was caused by the hotpot or how loving Heaton sounded saying that statement.
Lain pinched her fingers, then placed them on the table. She said with a smile on her face, “Verian bought a ring for you earlier but had no idea what width your finger is. I ran into her coincidentally and since I knew what your width is, I told her. Verian, don’t you plan on showing Heaton the ring you bought for him?”
