How this betting suddenly turned into something unexpected was something everyone took time to process. However, when the crowd realized this was no joke, cheers and roars erupted throughout the open court. Some even felt the seats and floors tremble as the excitement reached an all-time high.
Some people thought Penny was a madwoman—arrogant, even. Others wondered if Penny had any regrets, because the betting happened before the game, not during or after. Those were the minority of the crowd.
The rest?
All they could think was that Penny knew how to make things interesting. Be it in the past or now, she was the person who had always started things that diverted the entire school’s attention or gave them something fun to look forward to.
She was the one who started the bet Atlas had with the Star Section students, which many were interested in. Although she wasn’t the one who had started the bet between the basketball team and Max in the past, she contributed to it because of what she had started.
Today was no different.
It was just that, instead of her allowance, she had dauntingly raised the stakes to an entirely different level.
Those who had bet on Max’s team cheered even more fiercely, shouting to raise the team’s morale.
"Team Max! Take them all down!"
"Don’t let them make a score!"
"This is going to be easy—you guys are the best! Prove who the champion in this court is!"
"Go, Max! Go, Max! You can do it!"
"I’d spend a night with you, Max, if you win!"
No matter how ridiculous some of the cheers were, they could be heard everywhere, all meant to motivate the team. Some might say it was desperation, but it was actually their determination for this team to win. Many of those who placed their bets on Max’s team did it so thoughtlessly. They had carefully considered the situation of both teams. Now, they just had to make sure they won.
Those who had placed their bets on Hugo’s team, on the other hand, regained the spark they thought they had lost. Just like the other side, they cheered just as fiercely.
"Hugo, Penny’s life is in your hands—don’t you dare drag your sister into your broke life!"
"Hugo, I won’t forgive you if you lose! This is your sister’s life now! Even if you spit blood, we don’t care!"
"Don’t disappoint Penny, Team!"
"All our money’s on you as well! Please don’t let them take it away without putting up a good fight!"
"Team Hugo!"
"Blacky~!!!!"
Slater, on the other hand, pressed his mouth into a thin line. Glancing at his sister and seeing her unfazed, he breathed out and suddenly jumped from his seat.
"First Brother, Second Brother, and you other three extras!!!" Slater yelled, making Penny’s face twitch.
Did he just call Zoren an extra?
"If you lose, consider Penny and I, dead! I won’t forgive you if you let her down!" Slater joined the cheering, making sure his voice stood out more than everyone else’s. He continued when he saw his brothers look in his direction. "She put her life and soul into this and believed in you guys without a doubt! Don’t make her regret it!"
Penny, on the other hand, gazed at her third brother and smiled subtly. At first, she thought Slater was just angry and venting, but now she understood that Slater was worried about her. She couldn’t blame him because, just now, her entire career was on the line.
The company she built from scratch, which she had poured her heart and soul into. Others might think Penny didn’t care about her efforts and all the people working in her company, but that was far from the truth.
"Do you believe in them that much?" Haines asked quietly, looking at her with a helpless smile.
Penny smiled back at him, shrugging. "Uncle, back then, my brothers and even my dad would put everything on the line just because my allowance was on the line."
"What if they lost?"
"What if?" Penny repeated, humming and setting her eyes back on the court. "There’s no what if, Uncle. I believe in them, and I didn’t really think about the what-ifs when I placed my bets. I just know they will win... because they have to."
Otherwise, what was the point of tolerating Jonathan all this time if he wouldn’t receive her message?
