Even at this point, Sean still had the audacity to demean me.
Slowly, I pulled my clothes from his grasp and said flatly.
"Sean, it's over."
I turned and walked forward, never once looking back.
I admit, I'm a person who craves love, but love is not a necessity for me. And no one is indispensable in life.
Sean's actions caused Lily to miscarry, and I thought Lily would finally see Sean for who he truly was.
But to my surprise, she humbly clutched the remnants of their child and publicly begged Sean to marry her.
I don't know if Sean accepted, but it no longer mattered to me.
Although Sean refused to sign the divorce papers, after two years of separation, I could still sue for divorce.
Right now, I had more important things to do.
I bought a plane ticket to the beach, planning to get my diving certification and learn how to swim.
After all, I didn't want to experience that helpless despair for a third time.
I couldn't trust anyone but myself.
On the way to the airport, Sean still kept sending me messages, harassing me.
"Emily, I rejected Lily's proposal. She said she'd sue me for intentional harm if I refused, but I still rejected her because I love you."
"I know you hate me, but Emily, you should give me a chance to make things right. You can't just give up on me so easily."
"Honestly, after seven years of marriage, haven't I treated you well enough?"
…
I pressed my forehead and sighed.
"Sean, I don't love you anymore."
"I've already sent the wedding ring to your home. From now on, we have no ties."
There was silence for a moment before he sent me a voice message.
The man's voice was desperate, almost pleading.
"Emily, I can't live without you. Can't you, for the sake of our past, not divorce me?"
"I've cut ties with Lily. Let's just pretend nothing ever happened, okay?"
How could we pretend nothing happened?
I gently touched my flat stomach and typed back.
"But why stay with someone you don't love?"
"It's unnecessary."
"Really unnecessary."
At that moment, I couldn't help but smile sadly.
"Sean, Happy New Year."
As soon as I sent the message, he started calling me frantically.
I calmly turned off my phone.
When the plane landed, my swimming instructor, whom I had booked in advance, was already waiting at the exit.
I froze, staring at the familiar man before me, unable to believe my eyes.
"Alex Stone?"
By the time I got into the car, I was still in a daze, unable to recover from the moment.
I lightly patted my flushed face and opened my phone.
The first message that popped up made me freeze.
"Emily, I might be dying. My last wish is for you not to divorce me."
Panicked, I scrolled through my phone. The screen was filled with unread messages, all telling me the same thing.
The plane Sean was on had crashed.
The overwhelming news online confirmed the truth of the accident.
Noticing my change in expression, Alex asked with concern.
"Emily, what's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
I looked at him, at a loss for words, and said.
"The plane Sean was on crashed. His last words were for me not to divorce him."
The car fell into a deathly silence. After a while, I heard Alex's casual voice.
"It's okay, I can be the third party."
I froze, shocked as I stared at Alex.
Realizing what he had just said, Alex quickly turned red and changed the subject.
"Do you want to go back now?"
I looked at his unwilling expression and suddenly smiled.
"There's no possibility left between me and him. Don't worry about him."
