Chapter82
Perhaps, with time, patience, and unwavering devotion, I could knock down those walls, cracking the armor that guarded her heart. Maybe, just maybe, she’d learn to trust again, to love again. For now, I’d respect her boundaries, letting her set the pace. But I vowed to be constant, a steady presence in her life, wearing down her defenses with gentle persistence.
This pregnancy, our baby, was my second chance at redemption, a divine reprieve from the mistakes of my past. It was as if God Himself had handed me a lifeline, a chance to make amends for all the pain I’d caused. I felt a surge of determination through my veins. I would not let this opportunity slip away. I would do everything in my power to protect Karissa and our unborn child, to prove
myself worthy of this gift.
I shifted our attention to a different topic, attempting to steer the conversation toward a comfortable position “Are you excited to meet our baby?” I asked, the words tumbling out with a hint of nervousness. Of course she is dumbfucker!
For an instant, I worried that the question might come across as insensitive or forced, given the severity of our previous discussion But Karissa’s expression softened, her eyes warming with a gentle smile.
“I am.” Her gaze drifted downward, her hand instinctively cradling her belly. “Despite everything I love this baby to the moon already,” The tension in her shoulders eased, replaced by a quiet excitement. I watched, captivated, as her face transformed, radiating a tender glow.
“Have you thought–of any colors for the nursery?” Lasked, genuinely interested, but also grasping on the shortest of conversation I could have with her, it kept me sane.
Karissa’s gaze drifted from the window, where she’d been lost in thought. For a moment, her expression remained guarded, but then, ever so slightly, her features softened.
“Actually, I was thinking of a light gray of coral for my place,” she replied. My heart swelled and stung at the same time.
Before any word could escape my mouth, the hospital’s intercom system crackled to life, interrupting the silence.
“Karissa Edwards, please report to exam room three,” a gentle voice announced as we made our way inside. The doctor’s warm smile and greeting cut through the tension. “Welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards,” she said, her eyes sparkling with friendliness.
“Oh no!” Karissa interjected, her voice firm but polite. “We’re not married or together. “The doctor’s eyebrows arched slightly, surprised by the clarification, regardless she didn’t react much..
I flinched internally, my expression faltering for a split second. Karissa had given her Father’s last name. The doctor’s words faded into the background for a few seconds as I dealt with the harsh reality that she wasn’t mine anymore.
Composing myself, I forced a gentle smile, trying to shake off the sting of reality. Karissa, however, seemed unaffected, her face serene as she returned the doctor’s greeting
The doctor gestured for us to take seats, her eyes scanning our files. “So, let’s get started, shall we? Today’s appointment will be your first ultrasound “As the doctor launched into the details, I sat beside Karissa, my hand longed to hold hers.
“Ready?” the doctor asked gently reassuringly.
Karissa nodded, betore she lay down on the examination table. She gathered the hem of her loose–fitting dress and pulled it up. revealing her abdomen. The almost invisible soft curve of her belly seemed to glow in the fluorescent lighting
The doctor expertly prepared the ultrasound machine, squirting a clear gel onto Karissa’s stomach. “Sorry, just a little cold,” the doctor said with a warm smile, beginning the examination.
As the doctor’s skilled hands moved the transducer across Karissa’s abdomen, the screen sprang to life. However whatever joy we were blessed with was short–lived as the Doctor’s expression shifted, her smile faltering as she frowned. Her eyebrows furrowed deeper, Perplexion painted across her face.
“Is everything okay?” Karissa questions the rising concerns, making her gulp. The doctor’s silence was unsettling, her gaze fixed intently on the ultrasound screen. She adjusted the transducer, zooming in on a specific area.
“Let me just…,” she muttered, her words trailing off as she concentrated.
