Chapter60
“I did love you once, Rose,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.
“But I never had the guts to tell you. I thought you were out of my league, and even if you weren’t, my love was tied up with selfish desires and immaturity. I was too caught up in my own insecurities to ever consider what you truly deserved.” I paused, my past mistakes settling heavy on my shoulders.
“We both are at fault for making a terrible decision, then,” she conceded, her words a whisper of resignation.
“Clearly, it was just a moment of wealmness, a flying spark of unsaid feelings in the past. But in our lives, there’s no place for it,” she added, her gaze drifting away, as if acknowledging the reality of our situation.
“We’ve both moved on, or at least, we’re trying to. Let’s just… let’s just leave it in the past, where it belongs.” The air seemed to vibrate with the unspoken understanding that some wounds were too deep, some mistakes too great, to be undone.
With the mist clearing the truth was dawning on me. The realization that my feelings for Rose were a nostalgic echo of my younger self, a lingering ember of a forbidden flame was liberating. I saw now that those feelings, though intense, were a shadow of what I truly felt
for Karissa
My heart, once torn between the past and the present, finally acknowledged the depth of my emotions for Karissa. The attraction, the longing, the love, it all paled in comparison to the connection I shared with her. With this clarity, I knew I had to make things right, to find a way back to her and prove my devotion.
“It’s fine,” she whispered her voice laced with resignation, as she brushed her strands back exhaustively, the gesture a testament to her emotional fatigue.
“It’s my fault, whatever happened, I let it happen to myself.” The words hung in the air, a heartbreaking acknowledgment of the self–blame she’d carried for so long.
“It’s not your fault, it’s mine,” I said, my voice is soft and contrite.
“I am solely responsible for the mess I’ve made. My mistakes, my choices, my weaknesses… they all led to this moment. You don’t deserve to carry the blame for my failures, Rose. I own them, completely and utterly.” I spoke with a quiet conviction.
“Anyways, why are you here now, Keith?” She questioned, her voice rising slightly. The question was laced with a deeper inquiry, as if she was seeking to understand the motivations behind my sudden reappearance in her life.
“I–1… know you’re pregnant,” I stuttered, the words tumbling our of my mouth in a hesitant whisper.
Her expression froze, her eyes narrowing as if she hadn’t quite processed what I’d just said. She stared at me, her gaze piercing and unyielding, as if daring me to repeat the words. The air seemed to vibrate with tension, the silence that followed my admission feeling like an eterity,
“What? I
“What? Did I hear you right? Did you say… pregnant?” Confusion was plastered all over features, her brows scrunching up in shock and skepticism
“You don’t need to hide it, Rose,” I said, my words tumbling out in a rush. “I know you might hate me right now, and you have every right to But I want you to know that I’ll be there for you… and the baby,” I paused, my voice cracking slightly as I struggled to convey my sincerity.
“I know I don’t deserve it, but I’m asking for a chance to make things right, to be a part of your life and the life of our child.” My words turn to requests and into a plea for my child.
“Whoa, whoa, wait a second,” she interrupted, her hand shooting up like a stop sign.
“The thing is, Keith, I’m not pregnant,” Rose revealed sincerely, her voice firm and resolute with perplexion in her tone.
“I might have been hurt, but I wasn’t stupid. I took an after pill, and let’s just say I wouldn’t have kept it from you if that had happened,
no matter what the circumstances. But I would have told you,” she added, her eyes flashing with defiance honesty.
“I wouldn’t have kept something like that from you, even if I never wanted to see you again “That sentence those few words, robbed me

off my breath as I tried to drink it all.
I gazed into her eyes, and in that moment, I knew she was telling the truth. She had nothing to hide, no secrets to conceal. If she were struggling, if she needed help with debts or a child, she would have reached out to me. And then, like lightning raging, it hit me, if Rose wasn’t pregnant, then… It was Karissa!
