Isleen
~~
What did Rhett mean by he wasn’t the one who’d been ’visiting’ me at night?
After the last visitation, I had no choice but to share my experience with Lupe who seemed just as lost as I was. Our school hadn’t reopened yet but it was opening tomorrow and I wanted to deal with at least one mystery in my life before trying to work.
That’s why I came to visit Rhett in his office, apart from the fact that I kinda missed him too of course. I knew he’d gone to the training camp but I’d hoped that it would be built somewhere around the station. When I got to the station, I was told it was actually built somewhere deep in the woods, away from the protection of the pack.
Not like the pack was any safe these days anyway.
However, I also found out that the Gamma had come back for something important, but it seemed even the officials weren’t aware of what that was.
So, I did the only rational thing I could think of. I went into his office, but then things got steamy until we were rudely interrupted. And now we were having this discussion.
"Sorry, Rhett, it’s not like I don’t believe you, but... What now?" I threw my arms listlessly in the air, my chest getting heavier. I hadn’t bothered myself much about the ’nightly visits’ because I’d thought it was him. I’d felt violated but comforted myself with the fact that it was just my mate coming to give me... Pleasure. But now? "I feel violated, Rhett. Why does all this keep happening to ME? Have I really offended the moon goddess so much?"
My voice cracked as hot tears welled up in my eyes. I struggled hard to keep them in but a drop managed to flow down as I looked away, trying to avoid his gaze. I didn’t like him seeing me like this.
"Isleen..." I heard his voice mutter softly as he shot out of his seat. Soon, he was by my side, holding me close to his chest. "You’re not cursed. As much as I believed you and my son would get cursed for defying the mate bond, you’re too... You’re too good to attract such a punishment. Especially now that you’re with me."
I sniffled back snort as I raised my head to look him in the eyes. It was one of those rare moments where I saw a hint of vulnerability in his eyes. He was changing. Scratch that, he’d changed fundamentally compared to the first day I met him.
And to think that change had something to do with me. Was he even aware that he was changing?
"Thank you..." I managed to mumble, a slight smile creeping up my face. I didn’t know what else to say so we stayed like that for a minute or two. Until...
"I have something to tell you." Rhett suddenly blurted, sounding solemn. "Your... Friend, Cullen. Remember I came to interrogate him a few days ago?"
My brows creased into a frown as I wondered where he was going with this. "Yeah. What was that about anyway? Any luck with that case?"
He shook his head grimly but continued nonetheless. "No. But after an... Incident at the pack last night and a meeting with Aceco, my suspicions of him have been rekindled. Isleen, you need to be wary of him if he ever shows up. He might be the vampire."
I blinked awkwardly, looking at him like he’d said the most absurd thing ever. Really?
"She... She told me that I had some ’special qualities’ that she’d placed inside me. I also saw you in my dream but apparently, it was just... A manifestation of... Of my deepest desires." The blush on my face only increased, but I continued anyway. "She also said I should ’follow the path set before me because it’s the only way to find peace at the end’. Or... Something like that."
"I have dreams too, Isleen." He suddenly blurted, his tone laced with solemnity. "And in those dreams, I can communicate with the moon goddess. She’s usually vague or cryptic about the information she shares with me, but they always turn out helpful at the end." He paused, seemingly contemplating something. But he ended up asking. "Have you ever read of any prophecies of a ’chosen one’?"
I arched an eyebrow. Almost everyone in the pack knew of that prophecy one way or the other. "Yeah. The prophecy states that a wolf blessed by the moon goddess, will one day vindicate us from our enemies... AKA the vampires. What about it?"
Was he trying to imply that... That I was...?
"I’m the chosen one, Isleen." He dropped the bomb, shattering all my previous expectations.
My jaw hit the floor as I blinked in shock. It all made sense now. That’s why he was so uptight about traditions and serving the moon goddess.
Rhett is the chosen one!
