It was a lot for everyone to take in, not only was Marilyn, Marrin. She’d willingly changed her name, and they had twin sons together. “Have you met the boys?” his father asked him after some time.
“Not officially no, I’m not currently allowed near any of them, not until after the restraining order is over.” He answered “However.” He went on quickly, seeing his mother and two sisters go to speak. “I am allowed to text them and in the past few days Marilyn has allowed the boys to start sending photos through to me. It’s why I think she’s no longer angry and just annoyed with me.
“There was no contact at all up until mid–November, when the twins took it upon themselves to message me for the first time, and that was what opened up a line of communication between them and I. Admittedly, Marilyn was unhappy about it for a few days. She, however, hasn’t stopped it and this week. I was sent a picture Marilyn herself took and let the boys send through.”
“So a start.” His mother sighed. “The other pictures? Are they living well with Marilyn?” she asked.
He smiled and accessed the photo album he’d created and put all their photos in, handed her the phone.” Yes, it’s a start. I will be making amends properly. The boys also from my understanding, live well, always have done so. Marilyn’s amnesia only seemed to wipe Marrin and myself’s lives from her. She woke up knowing she was Marilyn Riddley, an author on the rise. Continued to live that life.”
All eyes were again on him. “Mm, it appears Marrin was already an author when we divorced. It started while
we were married, and she never told me about it. Never told anyone.” He shook his head. “I dare say that was due to the contract marriage, so we didn’t share absolutely everything with each other.
“I can only think that she kept that part of her life, just for herself, for after the divorce. A career to fall back on, so to speak,” he smiled “And she’s done well for herself, that much I can tell you. Not even the amnesia. stopped that part of her life.”
“When will we get to see her again and meet our grandchildren?” his mother asked him.
“Likely after the new year I imagine. I’ve not yet told the twins of their extended family. I’m just trying to form a bond with them myself at this point. Until that really happens and trust is built with Marilyn herself, I doubt any of you will get to meet them. It will likely be a few months still. It’s a slow process.”
“Well, you’ve only got yourself to blame on that front,” Veronica muttered.
“I’m aware, that I am completely at fault from the very beginning, to all the interactions with Marilyn herself, even now.” Calvin nodded. “I, however, can’t change the past, so I have to deal with the consequences of my own actions.”
“Marilyn?” his father asked. “What are your intentions with the twin’s mother?”
“Initially, it will be to get her to trust me, then to like me as a person, and build up to hopefully having her find a way to agree to date me, with the full view of getting back together once we reconnect and get to know each other. I still love her.” he sighed softly.
“You love Marrin, you mean,” Veronica stated flatly. “Marilyn is not going to be Marrin. You do understand that, right? Her life, if she recalls nothing of the two of you, is going to have been very different. They are

unlikely to be the same person due to different experiences.”
“I do understand that,” he nodded “And I will be trying to get to know Marilyn. You are correct on that, she is nothing like the Marrin that you all know. That soft, gentle–natured woman that you all liked is not what I see in Marilyn. Who is quite upfront and vocal about how she feels about me and my actions.
“Clearly stated she has no reason to trust me, and doesn’t recall me. Stated point blankly she also doesn’t
want to,” he sighed heavily. “So I have to get Marilyn to want to know me. On that note, she legally changed
her name to Marilyn before her accident, so when you do meet her, please address her as Marilyn. She
“So you’re being busy for Christmas and all of January?” Veronica mused. “You already knew back then,
when I was in your office, who she was, yes?”
“Yes, but no interactions at that point. I kind of screwed that up myself and nearly got another restraining order issued from her to me. All my own digging into her, saw it as stalking from a distance, and it didn’t go down so well on her end.” Again he held up a hand to stop the barrage of comments that he knew were
“I can only hope that in time, mother. I will be able to.” Calvin nodded. “It has to be all on her terms, because if not, she could well vanish into thin air once more. She has the means to do so… and” he muttered, “has already bought a new house, to do so as well. It’s here in Montana, actually.”
“Yes, and she’s alerted every time I leave the state of Texas as well.” Calvin nodded. “I’m trying to show her that I’m abiding by the court–appointed order to stay away from her, building the first steps of trust, I hope.”
“Are we allowed to send a Christmas card or gift to our grandchildren that we’ve known nothing about for the past seven years?” his mother sighed “And I want photos of them for the mantle. Preferably one with their
“I’d have to ask permission for a photo like that. Maybe I might be able to get one of the three of them if she allows me to go there for Christmas. The present? I’ve not even brought them anything yet. Because I don’t know if Marilyn will allow it. So, I’ll get back to you on that,” he stated it was all he could do.
“I don’t see a problem in you sharing photos with us, to display in my house. I treated Marrin as if she was my own daughter. We got along famously. So I don’t think Marilyn would object to the boys‘ grandmother having pictures of them either. I’m certain she would understand as a mother that grandparents like having pictures

of their grandchildren around them.”
“I’ll ask.” He stated he couldn’t just agree, it wasn’t his place. “I’m not going to just give you anything, it’ll likely be seen as me overstepping her boundaries.”
“Ask now son.” She stated, tapping his phone.
“We are two hours behind where she is,” he answered and looked at his watch. “It’s 8pm here, so 10pm there, and from my understanding, the twins have the phone in their room of a night. It’s not with Marilyn.”
“First thing in the morning then, and maybe Calvin, send the boys a picture of all of us, so they can start to recognise their own family, before they are allowed to meet us.”
He nodded. “Again I will ask Marilyn, if that is something she will let me do.”
He watched his family pretty much just get up and walk away from the table, leaving him with only his mother and father. They were going through that file, and she saw his mother cover her mouth with a hand as she looked at the pictures of Marilyn injured in the hospital and her eyes met his, tears filling them.
“I know.” He murmured. “It was really bad, they didn’t even know if she would make it.” he sighed and hated knowing that himself. Hated knowing that what he’d thought that day, of the plane crash, would actually have been her last thoughts as well. That he didn’t love her, and she was all alone in the world.
If she’d died that day, there would have been no one to claim her body, no one to bury her or cremate her, she’d have been buried in a potter’s field. He really did hate that thought, it would never happen now, he wouldn’t let it.
