Anna put on her wounded look. Grandma, why are you being so cold to me now? I’m your granddaughter, same as Stella. Why does she get all your love while you treat me like dirt? It’s not fair. You’ve always been this way.

Anna, enough,Eleanor snapped, her face like stone. That pathetic act doesn’t work on me anymore. Just tell me what you want.

Seeing that her act was getting her nowhere, Anna leaned right up to Eleanor’s ear and whispered, You’ve always wondered about the kidnapping, haven’t you, Grandma? About what part I really played?

Eleanor spun around to stare at Anna. Anna started laughing, and her sweet face looked completely twisted. That’s why you’re here today, Grandma. So I can finally tell you the truth.

Eleanor narrowed her eyes. And what’s the catch?

The catch,Anna purred, is that you’re in my way. You’ve become a problem that I need to solve.

What exactly do you want?Eleanor demanded, her voice tight with alarm.

Anna flicked her eyes toward Emily. Emily looked like she was about to be sick, but she shuffled forward on trembling legs.

Eleanor could feel something was seriously off. She looked between Anna and Emily. What is this? Do you think you can attack me just because no one is around? Anna, I’m your grandmother.

So what, Grandma?Anna sneered. I told you. You’re in my way.

Emily glanced at Anna, who was now signaling her with frantic, wild eyes. With trembling hands, Emily reached out and gripped the back of

Eleanor’s wheelchair.

Eleanor couldn’t move. She could only clutch the armrest of her wheelchair and said angrily, Are you two out of your minds?

Anna was done talking. Emily squeezed her eyes shut and shoved the wheelchair with all her strength.

With a burst of speed, the wheelchair raced downhill, sliding out of control. Eleanor fumbled for the brake, but nothing happened. It was completely useless.

Suddenly, Eleanor remembered that when she’d first arrived, Emily had walked right up to her wheelchair. At the time, she had been so focused on Anna that she hadn’t paid any attention to what Emily was doing.

The brakes,Eleanor thought, her mind racing in pure terror. That’s when Emily did it. She tampered with the brakes. But what do I do? Can I even jump?

In a last, desperate bid for survival, Eleanor lunged from the chair. But the wheelchair caught her foot and sent her flying. She slammed into the ground hard. The wheelchair crashed right on top of her.

Eleanor’s body was already so fragile, and this whole mess left her barely hanging on. She lay there, feeling the warmth of her own blood pooling on the cold pavement beneath her.

Emily went white as a sheet. She watched Eleanor, who had been struggling just moments before, go completely still. She scrambled over to Anna, her voice a terrified whisper. Is sheIs she dead?

Why are you so scared?Anna snapped, her voice cold and annoyed. “That’s exactly what we wanted.

Chapter 141

Emily was too terrified to speak. Don’t act so innocent,Anna sneered with disgust. Remember, you’re the one who brought in that kidnapper back then.

A bonedeep cold seized Emily. The paralysis started in her gut and spread to her fingertips. Coward,Anna spat at her.

Anna strolled over to Eleanor. As she got closer, Eleanor’s eyelids fluttered. Oh my, Grandma, you’re still alive, she said with fake surprise.

Eleanor’s hand twitched, reaching out weakly, as if to grab hold of Anna. But Anna simply took a neat step back, just out of reach.

The mask was completely gone. The gentle, sweet girl was nowhere to be seen. In her place was something truly terrifying.

Relax, Grandma,Anna cooed, her voice dripping with poison. This place is completely deserted. I planned this just as carefully as I planned Stella’s kidnapping. No one suspected me then, and no one will suspect me now.

The only real tragedy here is poor Stella. Can you imagine how heartbroken she’s going to be when she knows your death?

Eleanor couldn’t talk anymore, tears streaming down her face.

Oh, Grandma, why are you crying?Anna mocked, her voice disgustingly sweet. Think about it. Life is so hard for you, isn’t it? Your body’s falling apart more every day.

If I were you, I would have left this world long ago. I’m just helping you along. Think of it as a mercy killing.

Eleanor’s hand suddenly started clawing wildly, like she was trying to drag Anna straight to hell with her.

Anna watched, a sick smile playing on her lips. Still fighting, Grandma? You’re literally dying, and you’re still trying to take me with you? It’s pathetic. I beat you. Didn’t I?

I wasn’t even going to kill you, you know. But what you said to me todayAnd thinking about how you’ve always treated me like crap while spoiling StellaIt just boiled over. So I brought you here.

Since you’re gonna die anyway, I might as well tell you the whole story. That’s right. I had Emily find the kidnapper. Why? Because Stella wouldn’t let me take her spot at Quentiham University.

I bet you’re thinking, Over a university? Was it really worth all that? And I’m telling you, yes, it was. It was worth everything.

If Stella hadn’t leeched all the nutrients from me in the womb, would I have been the one who was sick all the time?
