“She said she didn’t want to hold me back, didn’t want my money, and thought divorcing now would avoid trouble later on.”
“… Well…” Derek really wanted to scratch his head, but his hands were on the steering wheel–no way to manage that kind of multitasking. “I mean, it’s not impossible. Didn’t you say Ms. Stone’s personality changed? People… they change their minds all the time.”
“Heh…” Louis gave a soft, vague chuckle.
“That’s a good thing, right? You don’t really lose anything. You and Ms. Stone were basically forced together by your grandpa anyway. Now you can each go find your own happiness–saves you the hassle of dealing with the divorce later. Besides, judging from everything she’s done, Ms. Stone was never really cut out to be your wife.”
“My wife,” Louis said slowly, “Doesn’t need to be ‘cut out‘ for anything. If she’s happy, that’s enough.”
That shut Derek up. Wait a minute… did that mean–Louis didn’t want to divorce Ms. Stone?
“You… don’t want to divorce her?” Derek asked, still half in disbelief. That woman didn’t exactly have any standout qualities.
“If I get divorced now, I’ll be seen as ungrateful,” Louis replied. “In business, reputation is as important as money or competence. No one wants to partner with someone who turns their back on people who supported them.”
Derek fell silent at that. That argument… sounded a little far–fetched. Sure, reputation mattered, but this wasn’t the medieval ages–this was modern society, with contracts and legal systems. Who even cared about that anymore?
Kendrick stumbled to a halt, turned to glare at him. “Louis, you dodged me!”
“Talk like a normal person.” Louis patted him on the shoulder, then spotted someone else behind him. “Waylon? What are you doing here?”
Waylon had a smile on his face, but his eyes held a hint of unease. “I came to talk to you about something, and ran into Kendrick on the way in.”
“And you?” Louis looked at Kendrick. “Weren’t you supposed to be with Asher?”
“I’ve been shadowing Asher for days—I deserve a break. Everyone else is busy, and I didn’t feel like going out, so I figured I’d come find you.” Kendrick shrugged.
