Breaking Free from the Ex-Husband novel Chapter 2

Forget it. I’m keeping the babies,Iris replied.

Her tone was flat, but her eyes were bright and clear, showing how determined she was.

You really think being pregnant will change anything?Heriberto let out a cold snort.

Iris kept her eyes down, not looking at him or saying anything.

Alright then. You’re the reason Mel can’t have kids. So, why not use your eggs and womb? At least she won’t have to go through the pain of pregnancy and childbirth.

What do you mean?

Heriberto looked at Iris coldly and said word by word, You can keep the babies, and Mel will be their mom. But you gotta leave for good!

Iris stayed in the hospital for three days.

When she got home, Heriberto’s chief secretary, Mara Caine, was there with a bunch of people, packing up all of his

stuff.

She thought he was going away on business and didn’t ask anything.

Mara packed over twenty boxes, taking pretty much everything that belonged to Heriberto.

Iris finally felt something was wrong and was about to ask when Mara spoke up first, Ms. Aguilera, Mr. Hale told me to go through everything he has given you over the years, like jewelry, purses, and clothes, and take it all away.

She looked at Mara, her mouth open in surprise, but she couldn’t get any words out.

No need for that. In this house, except for me and whatever is in the lab, everything else is Heriberto’s. I’ll just go.

Three years ago, she turned down further studies and walked straight out of college into a marriage with Heriberto, all for the sake of securing 50 million dollars to save the Aguilera Group.

Since then, she had never worked a day or made a dime on her own.

Or so they all believed, even Heriberto.

Uh

Mara didn’t expect Iris to say that. She stood there for a couple of seconds, not knowing what to do, and then said, I gotta ask Mr. Hale about this.

Iris bit back her bitterness and forced a faint smile at Mara. With graceful ease, she got up and walked towards her

lab.

288 Vouchers

Inside lay several products she had recently developedalready proven to deliver astonishing results. Once released, they would be worth a fortune.

Mara had been working for Heriberto for years and thought she knew all about Iris. She was sure that Iris was just a leech, relying on Heriberto to get by.

Seeing Iris start packing up in her lab like it was no big deal, she hurriedly called Heriberto to ask what to do.

Heriberto was in his office. After hearing what Mara told him, he was burning with rage, barely able to contain it as he barked out the order, Let her go! I wonder if she has the nerve to do it!

Mara felt the same way. She figured Iris was putting on a show, trying to get Heriberto to go easy on her.

Iris had no one to rely on. She didn’t even know where her parents had gone. Without Heriberto, where could she go?

But Mara was wrong.

Iris quickly packed up her products, loaded them into her usual car, and got ready to leave.

For almost three years, she had hoped Heriberto would fall for her, and they wouldn’t get divorced.

At the same time, she had made a backup plan so she wouldn’t be a mess when the divorce happened.

Ms. Aguilera.

Just as Iris was about to get into her car, Mara stopped her with a fake smile. This is Mr. Hale’s car. You can’t drive it away.
