Chapter 185
Chapter 185
Ruby’s POV
Although Killian said that none of them brought it up, the guilt kept haunting me. I was the one who delivered the news to him. True, in the end, Leonidas would have reported it to Killian sooner or later. Still, that didn’t bring me any comfort.
Lost in my thoughts, the sudden ringing of the landline shattered the silence. I picked up the phone to answer. Only a handful of people knew this number. A smile bloomed on my lips as I recognized the caller’s voice on the other end.
“Hello! I thought you wouldn’t be around. How are you, Mom?”
“Alice! I didn’t expect to hear your voice so soon. I’m doing well. How about you, my dear?”
Alice chuckled softly. “I had some free time. Alicia really wanted to chat with you, but she’s in a meeting with the two student body presidents. Well, she’s such an overly active student.”
“I expect the same from you,” I teased.
“Hah, no way. You don’t like getting involved with them unless it’s for extracurricular activities.”
There was a pause between her cheerful tone. Alice cleared her throat, the faint rustle of sheets suggesting she was in her dorm room.
“Mom, lately I’ve been thinking about my two youngest siblings. Not that I didn’t care before, tsk I don’t know, it just feels unsettling. They’re safe, right?” she asked hurriedly.
Her words caught me off guard. It hinted at the depth of the bond between siblings. I shouldn’t have expected any less from them. I hesitated to reveal everything. No one likes outright lies except perhaps a half–truth that could be forgiven.
I didn’t want Alice to worry more than she already might, not while the rest of us could still handle things.
“Mom? Are you still there?”
“Yes, my daughter. Sorry, Gallert wants his lion plushie again. He won’t sleep without it,” I said, steering the conversation elsewhere, though it was clearly a failed attempt.
“Oh. So what’s the answer?”
I sighed. “There’s nothing you need to worry about. You should just focus on your studies.”
“Really? You’re not saying that just to protect me or Alicia, are you?”
“No!”
I pressed my fingers to my forehead, thinking of how to make such a sensitive topic easier to discuss.
“It’s complicated. Fortunately, your father’s wits could outmatch any cunning fox,” I said in a playful tone.
“Okay, you’re bringing Dad into this. Please, tell me everything.”
Reluctantly, I gave in to her request. I skipped over a few “landmines” that could cause panic, leaving out any mention of the private conversation between Killian and his younger brother, Elias. Especially since his brother still stubbornly refused to ever accept anyone into his life as a true partner. In other words, it was a slight insult to the Moon Goddess though his reasoning was understandable,
The twins held the Moon Goddess in the highest regard. Sometimes I feared that such excessive devotion would only bring them pain. I had

once been in that position myself, which ended in betrayal. To reach my happy ending, I had to bleed and die at the gallows for a crime I did not commit.
There were many pebbles and pitfalls along the way. Because of that, Alice would be furious if she ever learned the grim truth. The two of them had never had a serious quarrel, and I didn’t want to be the spark that lit their first.
“Hold on, let me take a breath first.”
The corner of my lips twitched in amusement. Alice seemed to be holding back a scream. She must have been utterly shocked that fate had already taken such a step ahead of her.
“I can’t imagine myself in his place,” she said, swallowing hard. “I’m not jealous at all. In fact, I feel sorry for him. Ugh, my career is still a long road ahead. Is Elias still sane? You might need to call a mind healer.“.
I blinked. That was a rather unexpected response.
“What did Dad say? You know his reputation as a parent.”
My thumb absently traced the handle of the phone. “He’s not pleased. However, don’t worry from what your father said, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps it’s simply the Moon Goddess’s affection for Elias. Sometimes that can mean a platonic soulmate. The most accurate test would be once he’s reached adulthood by our people’s standards.”
“Hm, that’s somewhat reassuring,” she replied uncertainly. “By the way, does Elias have a study schedule today? If not, I’d like to call him.”
“Two o’clock for history class. You still have thirty minutes to reach him,” I said.
