Chapter 484: Everyone is getting ready

Kellen jerked awake, startled since he’d expected someone to wake him up, but that didn’t happen. At first, he was worried that something bad had happened. Someone had been taken, or gone crazy. He was worried, his heart pounding in his chest as he jerked his head around, on high alert.

Instead, he found Bree and Gwen speaking in hushed tones to each other, keeping an eye on the two members of their party who were still unconscious. They were only a short distance away, but Kellen couldn’t get his heart rate to calm down as he looked them over. Was something going on? Why hadn’t they woken him up?

Kellen couldn’t calm himself down as he glanced between the four people in front of him, until Gwen caught sight of Kellen with his eyes open and she blinked several times.

"Kellen, what are you doing up? Go back to sleep. Nothing’s happened, and you have more time to sleep." She told him and Kellen just stared at her for a long, long moment, checking that it was actually her, she wasn’t just a figment of his imagination. Gwen, as if able to piece together the fact that Kellen was having a moment, moved past Bree and took the few steps towards him.

She reached out, placing her hand on Kellen’s shoulder and just that simple touch really put Kellen at ease.

"Hey, it’s okay. You look like you’re seeing a ghost. How much sleep have you had over the few days you’ve been with us?" She asked softly and Kellen closed his eyes, swallowing thickly. How much had he slept? How often had he done it?

Honestly, he knew the answer, and he knew that Gwen wouldn’t like it. He’d taken a few cat naps here and there, but nothing serious. Nothing for a substantial length of time. Especially compared to how long he’d been looking for them.

"I’m fine. I just...I was worried something had happened. I normally don’t sleep well in gates." Kellen told her, not lying in the slightest, just not telling her the full truth. Kellen normally didn’t sleep well in gates.

He normally would do his reports once he got out and then make it to his tent after checking in with everyone else and he’d pass out for 12 hours after. That was where Brent normally would step up and make sure the rest of the tasks were completed.

Kellen’s throat grew tight as he remembered that that might not be the case anymore. At least he wasn’t in the gate by Bree’s words.

Gwen stared at him, her mask and his mask the only thing in between them as she scanned his face, checking his expression. When Kellen didn’t say anything else, she gave his shoulder a squeeze and nodded.

"Well, get some more sleep. We’re fine out here, and you need to relax. If you collapse, we’re fucked." She said, a smile on her face. It was tight though, and proved to Kellen that they both knew the truth. Without Kellen, they wouldn’t make it out of the gate alive.

Kellen hated that his sister knew that about their situation, but there was nothing he could do about that. He sighed, closing his eyes for a second before he opened them again, and found that Bree had also come over in that second and was peeking around Gwen’s shoulder.

"Get some rest, Guide Woods. You have maybe been asleep for an hour. The forest is surprisingly quiet right now around us, and the other two are still unconscious and breathing." Bree told him and Kellen sighed.

"Make sure to check them so that the plants are hurting them from below them." Kellen muttered, and Gwen smiled.

"We will, the same way we are going to make sure we check on you as well. Now, get some more sleep. If you wake up concerned again, just call out, okay? I’ll come over and make sure you know we’re alive and well." Kellen hated how easily Gwen could see through him. See what he was concerned about.

Then he remembered why she was able to guess what was concerning him. She probably had the same fears, and that calmed Kellen down while also making him sad. He hadn’t wanted Gwen to have the same traumas that Kellen had. It seemed that the rest of the world didn’t care about Kellen’s personal worries, since here she was, in a gate, with several of the people in her party dead, missing, and unconscious. Only 5 of the original 12 people party had been found alive. Some Kellen hadn’t even been found yet.

Kellen closed his eyes, allowing Gwen to be the lookout for him. He’d make sure she spoke to the therapist when they got out. Maybe ask for her and the rest to be benched for a while until they were deemed emotionally sound. He had a feeling that Bree would switch over to the teaching side of things.

He honestly couldn’t blame her. Wasn’t like Kellen was any different. He just also happened to have 7 years under his belt when he finally decided he’d become a teacher. Or, more like, Gunther had made a spot for him and Kellen had wanted to be near the Captain as he’d been a bit of a dick, unsure of himself, and now here they were.

Kellen’s chest ached slightly but he pushed that to the side. He would worry more once they were out. They were close. So damn close to the end of this nightmare. Then Kellen could see what was left for him when he got out.
