Kellen knew he was on a time limit. He needed to go further than they had done on the first time into the denser forest, but still make it out before day began to break. Thankfully, he’d been able to guess how long the night lasted. He knew how much of the night he had left if he was able to keep track. While unfortunately he wasn’t going to be able to see the night sky with the densely packed tree line, he had a watch, and he could set an alarm.
So, he did that.
Kellen marked the trees in a straight line going east every five trees. There weren’t as many obviously poisonous plants around like the pitcher plants and other carnivorous plants around. That only made Kellen stay on higher alert. He wondered what the Boss would be in this kind of environment.
It would be great if he could get to the Boss area, touch the core, and then they could all run away to the would be open gate. It was a damn pipe dream, but Kellen still had it. He hadn’t lost hope, not yet.
Kellen kept that thought in the back of his mind as he continued to trudge through the dense, poison-thick forest. It was getting darker and darker, the leaves unable to cast enough light to illuminate the area around him.
Kellen had to pull out his flashlight at one point, using it to see in the darkness. It felt a little strange to do so since he hadn’t had to use it this whole time, but here he was, wandering through a poisonous forest with his flashlight on for the first time.
It was hard to breathe, and each step felt laborious, but he was doing his best. At one point he thought he saw something reflective in the forest, but when he swung his flashlight back over the spot, it didn’t reflect again.
Kellen kept moving, hoping he’d be able to make it to the other side with the time he had left, but when the alarm went off, he let out a heavy sigh. That was shitty. He was going to have to come back tomorrow. Another damn day in this damn place.
Kellen marked the tree near him, did one last scan, and then turned and began to make the way back to the others.
He did worry that something might be behind him, especially after he might have seen something reflective in his flashlight, but he kept his eyes open, watching for anything strange.
Nothing jumped out at him, nothing targeted him, and he didn’t even hear anything follow him either. Kellen was utterly alone, nothing around him, and he made good time coming out of the forest as well. He thought it would take him longer to get out of the denser forest, but when he checked his watch, he made it out with about half an hour to spare.
Kellen wandered slightly, trying to find his sister and the others and for one terrible, long moment he thought he had lost them, but he found them again.
Everyone tensed as he approached, including Kellen, but when they all saw each other, everyone relaxed. The two members of the Guild who had been asleep and near death hadn’t woken up, nor were they dead. Bree and Gwen had been keeping an eye on them, and when Kellen came back to join them, they stared at him curiously.
"What were you looking for? The core?" Gwen asked and Kellen nodded as he sat down on the ground. He felt he could relax just a little bit because they were both there. Everyone was watching each other’s backs.
"In a way." Kellen told her. "I was also looking for a way through the denser part of the forest. I am sure that is where the core is, and the boss monster. I wanted to catch a glimpse to see what kind it was." Kellen told them and Gwen stared at him blankly while Bree went pale.
"What? We have to defeat a Boss monster to get out?" Her voice trembled as she asked the question and Kellen let out a laugh. It was a hard sound as he relaxed more.
"No Bree, we don’t have to kill a boss monster. We need to learn enough about a boss monster to dodge it and avoid making it mad so that we can touch the core and get the fuck out of here." Kellen said. "That’s my responsibility, you two can worry about dragging these fools out." Kellen said. "Plus, most gates have a boss area. They can’t leave it, even if we make it mad." Kellen felt a shiver run down his spine as he said that, but he ignored it.
It had to be the same, otherwise why would the gut feeling he had always relied on tell him that he was going to make it out alive? A changed boss area would fuck all of the plans over. No one would be able to make it out alive. Kellen was refusing to even consider it wasn’t an actual feeling and he was just being delusional.
He’d made it out of too many ridiculous situations for that to be the case.
"So...we don’t have to kill a boss monster, we just have to...figure out what it is so that you can touch the core. Is the boss monster guarding it?" Bree asked and Kellen looked at her. She should actually know this. It was part of the basic training that Guides and Espers got. Kellen was a little annoyed, but also, she had inhaled a lot of poison. She could be forgetting some things.
When he glanced towards Gwen, she had a stricken, serious look on her face.
"You can’t do that alone." She said softly. "You can’t deal with a boss monster alone. And yes, Bree, they are guarding it. They teach that in basics." Bree flushed, dropping her gaze to her feet.
"S-Sorry. It’s been a long time since basics and I...I didn’t really think I would need it back then." She admitted quietly and Kellen let out a soft sigh. It was a little disappointing that she admitted that, but it also didn’t surprise him. Even if they were the Saturn Guild, that was the attitude that Kellen was used to from city Guides.
They didn’t really care about things as long as they didn’t affect them.
Gwen shrugged, not really caring.
