KYE
Dad tried to wave him off. “It was an accident. There’s no need to—“
“No,” Liam cut in firmly. “You have never had accidents before, dad. And your car was recently maintained, this doesn’t make sense.”
The officer asked about enemies, threats, anything unusual before he drove. Dad shook his head, he was reluctant, but promised to cooperate. I stood silent in the corner, Kye’s face flashing unbidden in my mind. Why did he come to me? What was his whole purpose? And now that he had suddenly withdrawn from me, my father got injured. Is this all a coincidence? Or do I have to ask him?
When the officer was done asking his questions, he left and almost immediately, the doctor walked in. He moved over to dad and did some examinations, writing things down on the paper he was holding.
“We’re going to be keeping him for observations tonight,” he informed us when he was done. “Then, we’ll watch him closely and see how he’s responding to treatment. If he feels better by tomorrow, he can go home.”
“Okay, we’ll stay with him then,” Liam and I said in unison but mom shook her head.
“No,” she let out, a small smile playing on her lips. “You both have to go to school. And you know your dad won’t be happy if he finds out that you didn’t.”
Neither of us liked it, but we had to obey. “But mom, I have to drive the car,” Liam argued, trying to find a way to stay back but she wasn’t having it.
“Don’t worry,” she insisted. “Your uncle is going to be on his way.”
We begrudgingly left, promising to be back first thing in the morning before we went to school.
By morning uncle Dominic and his wife were waiting. “What happened to him?” He asked the moment he saw us.
“Nothing much,” Liam replied.
Uncle Dominic nodded and we walked out of the house, already dressed in our uniform. They drove behind us in their car as we headed to their hospital to see dad.
Dad was much better but he was asleep so we decided to leave for school and come back later. When we got to school, normal life carried on as if the night before hadn’t happened. Well, it only happened to us.
Students laughed in clusters, lockers slammed and there… by the courtyard stood Kye. He seemed to be in a better mood and he had a careless grin curved at the corner of his lips. A girl hung off his arm, and he held her in that easy, intimate way he used to hold me whenever he was being sweet to me. So I’m not even special.
Has he already slept with her? I wondered as a hot, unfamiliar feeling curled at the pit of my stomach. Was it jealousy? Or was it sadness? I wasn’t sure. No, that’s ridiculous. But I didn’t like the idea of the girl being with him and it scared something raw inside me.
I forced myself to focus on Liam. He and Kye’s team game was going to be starting soon and he needed to be sharp, not distracted by suspicion or fear.
