Fanny had just finished with her last patient and was about to take a sip of her coffee when she heard a sharp knock on her office door.
She swallowed hard and called out, "Come in!"
As the door swung open, Fanny's eyes widened in surprise. "Mom, what on earth are you doing here?"
"I'm here for a check-up!" Joie's tone was as sharp as cheddar cheese.
Fanny glanced over her mom's shoulder, searching for another familiar face. "Joie, where's Uncle Bob? Didn't he come with you?"
"Your sign outside says 'No Men Allowed,' doesn't it?" Joie's retort made Fanny chuckle despite herself. "That doesn't apply to Uncle Bob."
"What, he's not a man now?" Joie was clearly in a feisty mood.
Fanny quickly pieced it together. Her mother had been nagging her to come home for a family dinner, but Fanny had been dodging calls and making excuses. So, Joie had decided to take matters into her own hands.
"Mom, I'm in the middle of work. Can we do this later? I'll come by after my shift," Fanny tried to reason with her.
Joie slapped a registration slip onto the desk with a flourish. "Check it out. I signed up fair and square. No back doors, just business."
Sighing, Fanny slipped into her professional role, clearing her throat. "Alright, then. What seems to be the problem?"
"Everything's the problem," Joie replied, crossing her arms defiantly.
"Mom, I'm an OBGYN. If it's not in my department, I might have to refer you elsewhere," Fanny suggested, hoping to steer her mother away.
"I'm not going anywhere. I'm consulting with Dr. Willis right here," Joie insisted, slamming her palm on the desk for emphasis.
