As I spoke, my hand instinctively rested on my belly. I couldn't imagine going through this pregnancy alone, and I definitely didn't want him to come back only after our baby was born.
This was our baby, and I wanted Ernest to be part of every moment.
Conrad arrived surprisingly fast, taking just half an hour despite the fact that Allen's villa was located in the suburbs. Typically, it would take a good forty-five minutes from anywhere in the city.
And he even brought my favorite handmade caramel candies from Sweet Sally's. They're always fresh, made to order.
"Did Mr. Wagner grow wings or something?" Yolande joked, clearly impressed by his swift arrival.
His speed was enough to reassure Yolande of his love for me.
Conrad didn't bother with explanations, simply asking, "Where's Felicia? Is she still crying?"
"She's been crying nonstop. You better go check on her before she runs out of breath," Yolande said with a hint of exaggeration.
Conrad took her seriously, rushing up the stairs two steps at a time and bursting into my room without even knocking. "Felicia..."
He stopped short upon seeing me, his concern replaced with confusion.
There were no tears on my face, no trace of sadness. It dawned on him that he'd been fooled.
"It was Yolande who said you were upset," Conrad explained, his voice now calm and unhurried.
I noticed how much he had changed—everything he did was slower, more deliberate, from his speech to his actions.
Glancing behind Conrad, I saw Yolande hadn't followed him up. I gave him a pointed look toward the door.
He hesitated, then understood, closing the door before joining me. "I brought you some of that caramel brittle you love. It's still warm."
With that, he tucked both the candy and the ring into his pocket.
Relieved that the exchange was successful, I shifted the conversation to Fanny.
This meant they still hadn't found Fanny, and unease settled in my chest again.
He adjusted a pillow behind me, helping me recline a bit, and then asked, "What's the ring for?"
Taking advantage of our closeness, I whispered in his ear, "Turn it over to the police. It contains all the evidence Ernest collected on their crimes."

Good read. I like it when the protagonist is awesome, smart and straightforward as Felicia....
