Ouyang Li was elated to hear Nan Chen saying he would do what she asked, which could ruin both his and Ning Ran's lives.
Still, she was a little doubtful, for she never thought Nan Chen would do it.
Eyeing Nan Chen suspiciously, she asked, “Will you really do it?”
Nan Chen questioned coldly, “When will you let my son go?”
“Your son will come back when you've done it.”
“You'll have to let my son go first. Then, I'll do it.”
Nan Chen was no fool. What if she regrets it and decides not to let my son go when I've done what she wants? What am I going to do then?
“You have no sincerity!” Ouyang Li's anger returned.
Nan Chen said nothing in response to that.
Ouyang Li fell quiet, too. The two simply stared at each other in silence.
At first, Ouyang Li thought she was winning. To her dismay, Nan Chen decided not to take action anymore, and that frustrated her a little.
“Hurry up and do it. Once you've done it, someone will free your child,” Ouyang Li urged.
“I'll do everything you say only if you bring my son to me and show me that he's fine. If you don't want to do that, you can give him to someone else so I can see him through a video call. If you refuse to do any of these, I won't do anything you ask. I'm warning you—I won't forgive anyone who hurts my child. It doesn't matter who the person is, because I'll make sure they pay dearly,” voiced Nan Chen coldly.
Ouyang Li snickered. “Fine. You'll regret this.”
Nan Chen was about to say something when the police suddenly rushed in.
“Ouyang Li, you're suspected of being involved in a kidnapping case. Please cooperate with us in the investigation.”
The match had only officially begun when Nan Chen exited the stadium.
It was Ouyang Qi who called the police. When he heard from Ning Ran that Nan Chen had come to Pearl City to meet Ouyang Li, he called the police right away for fear that she might harm Nan Chen.
Surprisingly, Nan Chen seemed a little displeased upon seeing Ouyang Qi in the car.
“Why did you call the police? She can't do anything to me. I could've gotten more information out of her if you didn't do that. The police apprehended her without having any solid evidence. That means the most they can do now is just detain her for twenty-four hours. What you did is meaningless and has only ruined my plans.”
Ouyang Qi had never heard Nan Chen speak so much in one go, let alone scold him.
“I'm sorry for causing you trouble, but I had to do it. Even if the police can't get anything out of her, at least they can stop her from hurting you.”
Ouyang Qi chose to keep his stand. He believed making the police report was the right move.
Meanwhile, Nan Chen did not want to speak anymore.
The Ouyang family is a bunch of weirdos. They're either evil or just stupid.
“Besides, you know Pearl City is the Ouyang family's territory. After all, this was where the Ouyang family rose. Our family used many illegal methods to expand our territory in the past. In fact, my father spent a lot of money to get many outlaws on his side. These people won't hesitate to kill people. They may be old now, but old criminals can still do crimes. Apparently, they've gone to the stadium today, too. I know Qiao Zhan has arranged for people to protect you, but there are so many people in the stadium. There's no telling how many outlaws there are. If someone were to make a move amidst the chaos, Qiao Zhan's men might not be able to protect you. Ouyang Li has lost her mind now, and she can risk anything just to destroy you. She's no match for you, but if she's ready to risk it all, she can definitely destroy you.”
Ouyang Qi did not exactly state the details, but Nan Chen could tell the former had discovered more news that was unfavorable to the latter.
There were many people in the stadium. If Ouyang Li had placed a hundred outlaws there whose only objective was to kill Nan Chen, it would be impossible for the latter to escape unscathed when chaos broke out.
Nan Chen would surely die if there were two hundred or even three hundred outlaws there.
They lived in an era where money could make the world go round. As a family capable of hiring professional mercenaries from abroad, it would not cost the Ouyang family a lot to hire a few hundred outlaws.
It was only when Ouyang Qi had said all that did Nan Chen realize he had taken a huge risk to rescue his child.
With Ouyang Li arrested, Nan Chen could at least leave Pearl City safely.
Then again, that meant Nan Chen lost his only connection to his son—Ouyang Li.
She would never admit to being involved in his son's disappearance. Now that Ouyang Qing was already in prison, she would make the same mistake.
Moreover, she definitely was not personally involved in kidnapping Dabao since all she needed to do was put in some money.
Having failed to rescue his son, Nan Chen could only return to Flower City first.
Sure enough, the police failed to get anything out of her. In fact, she was detained for less than twenty-four hours when Ouyang Qi bailed her out.
Ouyang Qi appeared meek and submissive, as if trying to please her.
“Get lost. I'm not riding in your car,” Ouyang Li fumed.
“Don't be like this, Li. It'll be troublesome if the reporters took pictures of you standing by the road and hailing a cab.”
Ouyang Li had to agree with his words.
She must not let the reporters take pictures of her coming out of the police station, for they would make up ridiculous stories.
Given no choice, Ouyang Li got into Ouyang Qi's car, and the two arrived at the Ouyang residence in Pearl City.
Ever since she went to Flower City, Ouyang Li had not visited home in a long time.
Ouyang Qi had already gotten the housekeeper to prepare a meal. By the time Ouyang Li had finished showering, she was starving.
The dishes made by the housekeeper who had been working for the Ouyang family were terrific.
It had the taste Ouyang Li and the others were familiar with.
Dishes that brought back fond memories would always be delicious.
Hence, Ouyang Li devoured the food in silence.
“Li, do you remember when all three of us used to have meals together? The best would always be given to Qing and me. Qing is pretty, great with her words, and smart. She used to get good results in her studies all the time. Naturally, she was loved more. I, on the other hand, am a boy, and the family had some preference for sons. So, I didn't have it that bad. You, however, were cared for the least. I was too young to realize this back then. Now that I think about it, I can't help but realize how hard it must've been on you,” Ouyang Qi said with a smile, his eyes slightly wet with tears.
He was truly recalling the meals they had in the past. Although they fought sometimes back then, they could still sit at the same dining table and enjoy a meal.
At the time, they did not appreciate the moments they had. It was only when they had grown older did they realize those were the closest moments they would ever have and that they would never get to experience that again.
Ouyang Li's eyes also reddened, but she quickly put up her guard.
“Why are you telling me all this? Do you have something up your sleeves? I know you're working with the Nan family. You're not my brother anymore.”
Sighing, Ouyang Qi said, “Don't look at me like that, Li. No matter what you've done to me in the past, I still see you as my sister.”
