I...
It was true.
After pausing, I said, "He is Casper's younger sister. When Casper asked Hendrix to take care of her after he passed, she became Hendrix's responsibility and obligation. He cannot just give up on it, can he?"
She rolled her eyes at me with disdain, "Even though she's Hendrix's responsibility, does that mean he has to care for her for the rest of his life? Would her brother, Casper, even care for her for the rest of his life? Even a father won't be able to do that. Don't use something like this against Hendrix."
"Moreover, this woman is already thirty. Doesn't she know a thing or two about living independently? If she loves clinging to a man so much, she could always use money to get one."
I was rendered speechless by what I was hearing.
It was the first time I heard such cruel things from Nerissa.
I pursed my lips and lowered my head to eat. What she said was true.
Even if Casper did entrust Andrea to Hendrix, he was not her parent. Hendrix did not have to spend the rest of his life taking care of Andrea.
After dinner, Nerissa had matters to attend to.
Since I did not, I decided to just head home. As I was about to leave, I bumped into Andrea again at the mall entrance. It was not a coincidence; she had been waiting for me.
"Arianna, who do you think you are? Have you overestimated your worth and value?" She spat, blocking the entrance.
Along the way, she looked grim. She obviously did not want to talk to me.
As I drove, I said, "I got my driving license six years ago. That was also my second year being married to Hendrix. I remembered how he took good care of you. Back then, the Roberts Group had only been in his hands for two years, so he had daily social engagements. Sometimes when Evan was not around, he did not like to call for a cab nor a driver. So later on, he allowed me to learn how to drive. He told me that since I had nothing to do but wait at home for him to come back, I might as well learn how to drive and follow him on his social engagements; at least I would be able to drive him back after."
She sneered. "He saw you as a subordinate. Why would a wife follow her husband to social engagements?"
I smiled lightly. I wasn't angry as I nodded. "Well, that was what I thought at that time, that he did not love me and saw me as a subordinate. But that was my mistake. After I learned how to drive, he didn't in fact bring me along to social engagements. Instead, he arranged a car for me and let me drive myself to work and back. This was much safer and more convenient for me."
Her face stiffened a little, and she didn't say anything in response.
I continued, "Hendrix's love has never been exaggerated. He was worried for my safety since I used to go to work by cab. So, he asked me to learn how to drive. He knew he was a busy man and couldn't ferry me around all the time, so it was better for me to drive myself."
