As soon as they sat down, Nerissa said, "It's tough finding authentic Mexican food in Jarold City, but this restaurant is not bad. You'll know soon enough."
As she ordered the dishes, she said to me, "Before coming to Jarold City, I really liked the Mexican restaurant around Ucrebury University. After coming here, I never go there anymore. Every time I crave Mexican food, I'll go around the city looking for it. I found that there aren't many authentic Mexican restaurants in Jarold City after searching for years. But this restaurant's actually pretty good."
I could sense how homesick she was from what she said.
She moved to Jarold City when she turned eighteen. Her memories of home slowly faded as she grew older, until she only had her childhood memories left.
It was like how I liked desserts. I remembered how Grandma always had different kinds of candies in her pocket. Whenever I felt upset or cried, her candy could make all my sadness vanish.
Now, the people in our memories were either gone or had left us. The only thing that we could do was to reminisce on the sweet memories.
When the waiter served the food, I got up and said, "Aunt Nerissa, I'm going to wash my hands."
Our hands had definitely been dirtied after a day of shopping. She got up and went to wash her hands with me.
On the way back, I headed to the washroom while she went straight back to our table.
As I was returning to my seat, I saw a familiar face whom I had not seen for a long time. It was Andrea.
"Aunt Nerissa, I've been busy these days, so I haven't been able to visit you. You seem to have lost some weight," Andrea remarked.
There were two strangers beside her whom I wasn't acquainted with. They were probably her friends.
Nerissa was not someone who would directly offend someone. She nodded and smiled faintly, "You're such a sweet talker. It matters little whether I gained or lost weight. Nothing has changed about me."
Andrea smiled lightly, "I will pay you a visit when I get the time to."
The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly.
Things felt harmonious.
As Nerissa saw that Andrea had no intention of leaving, she smiled and said, "Miss Burton, would you like to eat with us? I ordered a lot. Join us if you like."
What Nerissa said felt a little odd. Calling Andrea "Miss Burton" sounded polite but distant, which was enough to substantiate the distance between their relationship.
Yet, the second half of what she said was sincere and did not sound like she was brushing her off. How ambiguous.
Andrea was surprised to hear this, but she did not refuse. She sat down beside Nerissa and said coyly, 'Aunt Nerissa, I didn't know you liked Mexican food. We can come here together the next time we're free. I also like Mexican food."
Nerissa gave her a small smile. She took some food for her, put the cutleries in her hand down, and placed her palm on the back of Andrea's hand. She patted Andrea gently and said, "Andrea, for you and Hendrix to recognize me as your aunt is a blessing. However, it's not very appropriate for you to keep addressing me as such seeing that you and I are neither relatives nor family. From now on, you should address me as Madam!"
What she said sounded gentle yet authoritative.
Andrea's face stiffened a little, but she still smiled and said, "Hendrix and I have always been close, even closer than our own relatives. Since he calls you Aunt Nerissa, naturally, I should too. Calling you my aunt is a show of respect and love."
