When I woke up at midnight, Hendrix was not around. So, I got out of bed and went to Anne's bedroom.
Anne was sleeping soundly. Hendrix had given her room warm and cozy interior designs. As she slept quietly, she looked like an angel that had fallen from the sky.
After watching her quietly as she slept, my wandering mind came back to the present moment. Much to my astonishment, Hendrix had been standing behind me.
I sluggishly turned to look at him. Sensing I was still a little drowsy, he walked towards me. He held me in his arms and hugged me for a while. After that, he led me out of Anne's bedroom.
We went back to our bedroom. Lying on the bed, I asked, "What did Josiah tell you?"
I didn't get to ask him about it as I was enervated on our way back home.
He looked at me and pursed his lips. After a brief pause, he replied, "It's about Anne. The Saunders family found out about her. They want her to stay with them."
I smacked the lamp on the bedside table and it fell off. I felt myself becoming more hysterical as I said through gritted teeth, "Over my dead body."
Letting out a sigh, he got off the bed and started picking up the lamp carefully with his bare hands. There were shards of glass on the floor. Pursing my lips, I felt a tinge of affection and annoyance at the same time.
After cleaning up the mess on the floor, he turned to look at me. "If you insist on having Anne stay with us, I'll try to convince Josiah. But Arianna, we need to ask Anne about how she feels about all this."
"She's just a kid. How would she know what to say? We've been through thick and thin together for the past four years. She's my everything. Josiah can't take her away from me. At least I'll love her unconditionally if she's by my side; the same can't be said if she stays with Saunders. Are you certain that Josiah will take good care of her? Will the Saunders family members treat her well? Who does he think he is? I've given my all to raise this child. He can't take her away at his whims and fancies."
It had never been my intention to let Josiah take Anne away from me. Neither would I permit him to do so.
Hendrix sat beside me. He reached out to hold my hand before patting it gently to console me. He assured, "Nobody will force you if you stand your ground. Honey, it's getting late. Let's hit the sack."
My gut told me Hendrix was hiding something from me. I just didn't have the slightest idea what it was.
Back then, I agreed perfunctorily so that he would stop pestering me. However, it seemed he had taken my words seriously.
"Irvin, I have a lot on my plate. I'm begging you. Please, let me go!" I felt as if I had been bludgeoned to a dead end and had nowhere to go.
There was a moment of silence on the other end. It seemed that he was not in a good mood. "Let you go?" He sniggered and said, "I wasn't aware that I forced you to do this?"
I grimaced, a mild headache attacking my frontal lobe. I quickly drove the car to the side of the road and put it in 'park'. I then hung up on him and switched off the phone.
I felt much better after regaining my composure. I did not know what was wrong with me lately. Whenever I was faced with inconveniences, I would either have the sudden urge to retch or would be on the brink of a nervous breakdown.
The recent series of events had taken its toll on me. I got out of the car and took a leisurely walk so as to soothe my nerves.
Never had I thought that I would bump into Chloe who was donned in a light brown trench coat. She greeted me, "What a coincidence. Would you like to go for a drink?"
