With that said, Hendrix took me into his arms, saying, "I've thought about it and store- bought pastries are always too high in sugar. I'll bake one for our daughter instead."
To come all this way and go home empty-handed, it didn't look like the cake was Hendrix's end goal.
He put a hand on my shoulder with force and gestured with his eyes that it was time to leave.
As if failing to take Hendrix's hint, Jordan continued to act friendly with us. "Hendrix, you sure dote on your child a lot. I won't hold you up then. Since Aurelia likes sweet things, I'll bring her some myself soon."
Hendrix didn't respond. Instead, he walked me out of the cake house with a polite curve on his lips.
As I sat in the passenger seat, I couldn't help but look back at the store. "Did you bring me here on purpose because you knew they would show up here?"
"You guessed half of it." With one hand on the steering wheel and a serene gaze ahead, Hendrix started the engine. "I knew they'd be here today, but I didn't know when. It means we're quite lucky to have met them."
"We should find out who that woman is now that we've crossed paths. We were in such a rush to leave..." As I withdrew my gaze and fiddled with my fingers, worry and unease rose inside me.
Although we had proved that another me existed, and it did ease a lot of tension, it also meant troublesome days laid ahead.
"You don't have to guess anymore. She is who you think she is," Hendrix concluded.
I froze for a few seconds before looking at him. "Naomi Attwood? Is it really her?"
"Don't you believe me?" Hendrix asked rhetorically.
"So, Naomi was disfigured?"
What Hendrix said gave me a general idea of the whole story.
Sebastien's men had left Naomi behind before the explosion. Fortunately, she was blessed with a chance to survive. Being torn between living for her child and dying with the man she loved, she hesitated.
In the end, she chose her child. However, she missed the best opportunity to escape, which was why she got caught in the explosion. Jordan's men, for some reason, had rescued her, and they ended up fighting on the same side. Later, she came to live as another me.
Though the explanation made sense, one thing that remained unclear.
And that was Naomi's reason for targeting us.
