After lunch, Irvin did not head upstairs. Instead, he helped me and the servants clean up the table and do the dishes. He was so adroit at it, as though we were an ordinary married couple.
Freya's disapproval didn't escape my notice.
The three of them must be hiding something from me.
After chatting momentarily, I feigned drowsiness and made an excuse to go upstairs. "Irvin, do keep Miss Moore and Mr. Zimmer entertained for me. I'm a little sleepy after taking the medicine. I need to lie down in my room for a while."
"Go ahead." Irvin didn't think much of it. He got up, helped me to the stairs, watching me ascend to the second floor and disappear at the corner of the corridor.
After ensuring that I could not be seen from downstairs, I leaned against the wall and eavesdropped on the situation below. Upon hearing Irvin's footsteps of walking back to the living room to sit down, I turned around, tiptoed to the wooden pillar near the staircase and hid myself behind it to watch what was going to happen downstairs.
Before Irvin sat down, Freya's cold voice could be heard. "We've gone through all this trouble to search for Arianna all over the world, but it turns out that you've been hiding her under the noses of both the Reid and Moore families all this while. Irvin, should I call you smart or audacious?"
Irvin still wore a nonchalant expression. He smiled while answering, "I'll take that as a compliment. Thank you."
It was the first time I had seen such an expression on him after being with him for so long.
"When do you plan to tell Arianna the truth?" Freya asked again.
"Over my dead body," Freya retorted, "You can forget about keeping Arianna caged like this for the rest of her life. I'm her best friend. Moreover, the Reid family...
"The Reid Family?" Irvin smirked. "They couldn't even stop a death notice. Do you think she will be as safe as she is now if you thrust her back into her old life?"
When this was brought up, Freya suddenly fell silent, finally caught speechless.
Irvin stood up and straightened his blazer. He said monotonously, "It is what it is, so it's best for everyone to fake confusion and think of Arianna as a dead person. Needless to say, I'll arrange a new identity for her. If you really want to help her, don't be a busybody."
